AvalonBay multifamilies among first to be recognized EPA awards “ENERGY STAR” to AvalonBay communities

ASHINGTON, DC — AvalonBayCom- munities, Inc. an-
nounced that two of its Wash- ington DC communities, The Statesman and Avalon The Albemarle,havebeenrecognized by the U.S. Environmental Pro- tection Agency (EPA) as among the first multifamily housing properties to earn ENERGY STAR certification for superior energy performance. MatthewBirenbaum , Ava- lonBay’sexecutivevicepresident – corporate strategy, said: “Ava- lonBay is delighted to accept EPA’sENERGYSTARcertifica- tion in recognition of our energy efficiency initiatives.AvalonBay has significantly enhanced our commitment to environmen- tally sustainable development, construction, and living in our apartment communities.” To earn the ENERGY CER- TIFICATION, AvalonBay con- ducted ASHRAE Level 2 En- ergy Audits on the buildings to identify areas of opportunity for improvement. This resulted in a number of identified projects that the company continues to implement. Additionally, Ava- lonBayhas implementedseveral energy efficiency and sustain- ability improvements at the communities, including replac- ing the building management system, replacing windows, replacing chillers, replacing all fancoil units , replacing the roof, andretrofittingthe lightingtobe more energy efficient. “AvalonBay’s achievement demonstrates that it’spossible to overcome the many traditional barriers to energy efficiency in themultifamilyhousingmarket and reap significant energy and cost savings,” said Jean Lu- pinacci , chief of the ENERGY STAR program for commer- cial and industrial buildings. “Through the example they’ve set, we see how we can all help to make properties more cost- effective for renters, while cut- ting greenhouse gas emissions and protecting human health.” AvalonBay’s comprehensive approachtomultifamilysustain- ability includes piloting energy labeling of apartment homes, energy usage benchmarking in 48communities, greenpractices checklists for new construction and redevelopment, a 78% in- crease in the number of com- munitiesseekingenvironmental certification, the installation of charging stations for electric vehicles in a number of com- munities. n
