HOPE CHAPMAN: Born in Oxford, Hope Chapman relocated to Birmingham to study Fine Art at Margaret Street School of Art in 2010. Working in Pitt ink pen on paper, Hope creates detailed pointillism portraits of unnamed models photographed by the late fashion photographer Helmut Newton. Hope’s other influences include contemporary artist Laurie Lipton’s drawings and traditional Tibetan mandala designs. Hope said: “Newton’s photographs are a luxurious documentation of past decades. Fashionable, empowering, elegant women are portrayed in semi-erotic settings, inspiring me to create luminous, vivid portraits. I have combined the forceful aesthetic with detailed, structured drawings using the accuracy and patience of traditional Tibetan mandalas. For me, dot work is a meditation.”
