JEMBRANA REGENCY-INSPIRED THE PATTERN

INDIGENOUS BALI

Featured in this edition of Indigenous Bali is a striking pattern by artist Pak Made Wartawan, inspired by the distinctive weaving traditions of Tenun Jembrana. Tenun refers to traditional handwoven textiles created using intricate techniques that have been passed down through generations. Celebrated for its unique motifs depicting flora, fauna, and meaningful cultural symbols, Tenun Jembrana is crafted using natural dyes derived from local plants, which impart a rich character and individuality to each piece. Among Jembrana’s most iconic textiles is the Endek Mekepung pattern, known for its warm reddish hues and intricate designs inspired by the region’s traditional bull races. Alongside this, the Cagcag textiles capture the rhythmic sounds of the traditional loom, a testament to the region’s deep-rooted artisanal heritage.

Jembrana is an often-overlooked part of Bali—calm, natural, and rich in cultural depth. Located in the island’s westernmost region, it offers travelers tranquility and a fresh perspective through its lush landscapes, vibrant rice fields, and unique traditions like the Makepung bull races. With beautiful beaches, national parks, and authentic village life, Jembrana presents a quieter, more genuine side of Bali that’s truly a hidden gem waiting to be explored.

These fabrics are created through labor-intensive, time-honored techniques, often requiring days or even weeks to complete, making each piece a true reflection of Jembrana’s vibrant cultural legacy and skilled craftsmanship. Turn these pages and embark on a journey deeper into Jembrana, where rich cultural traditions, stunning natural landscapes, and masterful artistry come together to reveal Bali’s hidden treasures.

CANDIKESUMA Candikusuma Village in Melaya, Jembrana, blends coastal and plantation landscapes with rich heritage. Visible traces of ancient civilization include the triangular Tugu Candikusuma shrine, the sacred Sumur Bulus well, and the striking Paras Pihpih cliffs by the Danghyang Gede River. Spiritual landmarks such as Pura Dangkahyangan Indra Kusuma and the coastal spring Tukad Danghyang Cerik emphasize the village’s deep cultural and religious roots, offering a quiet glimpse into Bali’s timeless past.

RAMBUTSIWI TEMPLE

Perched on a cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean, Rambut Siwi Temple in Jembrana offers a stunning mix of nature and spirituality. Visitors approach through tranquil rice fields, as if guided by nature itself. Framed by sweeping ocean views, the temple’s calm atmosphere and spiritual aura make it a cherished site for reflection and meditation. It is located just east of Yeh Embang in Mendoyo.

BUNUT BOLONG

KURMA ASIH SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION Founded in 1997 in Perancak, Kurma Asih leads efforts to protect Bali’s endangered turtles. Once hunted by local fishermen, turtle populations declined sharply until founder I Wayan Tirtha shifted focus to conservation and raising awareness across Bali.

In the misty highlands of Manggisari, West Bali, stands Bunut Bolong, a centuries-old bunut tree with a remarkable hole at its center. The term “bunut” refers to this tree type, and “bolong” means hole, describing a natural tunnel large enough for vehicles to pass through. Often shrouded in fog, the tree’s majestic form and spiritual significance create a magical and almost otherworldly atmosphere.

SPA AND WELLNESS

MEDEWI KELAPA RITUAL

Indulge in a head-to-toe journey of deep relaxation and renewal. The Medewi Kelapa Ritual begins with a soothing coconut milk foot soak to gently ease you into serenity. This is followed by a delicate coconut body scrub that exfoliates and invigorates the skin, preparing you for a traditional Balinese massage. Using the finest virgin coconut oil, the massage delivers profound hydration while easing muscle tension and calming the senses. The experience culminates with a nourishing hair spa treatment, where virgin coconut oil deeply conditions, leaving your hair silky, soft, and lustrous. This 150-minute ritual is priced at IDR 3,000,000 and concludes with a cherished local treat: Bendu Negara, a traditional delicacy from Jembrana crafted with glutinous rice flour, palm sugar, white sugar, grated coconut, and wrapped in banana leaves.

In Bali’s westernmost corner, Jembrana remains a quiet gem, home to wild coastlines, rice fields, forest trails, and timeless traditions. For I Gusti Sari Kade Sari Aningsih, Spa Concierge at Lagoon Spa, Jembrana is more than a destination, it’s a feeling. “When I go home to Jembrana, I feel grounded,” Sari says. “The rivers, the rice fields, the sound of the ocean, it’s the kind of peace that stays with you.” Life in Jembrana flows with nature. People still turn to the land for healing, from boreh made with cloves and tree bark to loloh sembung, a herbal drink for inner heat. “We’ve used these for generations,” Sari explains. “Simple remedies, but they work, and they connect us to our roots.” Spiritual cleansing is also part of daily life. Melukat, the Balinese water purification ceremony, is often done at temples or in the family merajan, a private home shrine. “It brings clarity and calm,” Sari reflects. “You feel lighter, like something has been lifted.” Jembrana’s culture is vibrant and alive. The thrilling Mekepung buffalo races and deep bamboo rhythms of Jegog gamelan are unique to the region. “Jegog is something you don’t just hear, you feel it,” she says with a smile. “It’s powerful, deeply tied to the land.” Even modern wellness finds a place in Jembrana, albeit in a uniquely local way. A practice known as ORHIBA- Olah Raga Hidup Baru, or “New Life Exercise”-is gaining popularity among locals. It’s a non-competitive movement practice that focuses on slow, flowing motions designed to create internal energy, or bioelectricity. “ORHIBA isn’t a sport to compete in,” Sari explains. “It’s about moving with purpose, feeling alive, and creating health from the inside out. It teaches you to listen to your body and breathe with the sky above.” Local cuisine, too, holds a mirror to the land and its people. Jembrana’s food is humble, rich in flavor, and deeply tied to tradition. It is made not just to nourish the body, but to gather families and mark sacred moments. “I love Lawar Kelungah, which is made from young coconut mixed with spices and minced meat,” she shares. “It’s spicy and aromatic, a taste of celebration. And Jaje Bendu is my favorite treat, sweet coconut and palm sugar wrapped in banana leaves. It always reminds me of temple offerings and time with family.”

For those wishing to explore the area, Sari recommends a few special places. Medewi Beach is perfect for those who love surfing, while Perancak Beach offers black sands and a peaceful local charm. Nature lovers can head to the West Bali National Park, where mangroves, tropical birds, and quiet trails create a sanctuary. And at Gilimanuk Bay, travelers can catch a glimpse of daily life at the ferry gateway to Java. Pura Rambut Siwi, a seaside temple, is a place of deep peace. “The breeze is gentle, and it feels sacred,” Sari shares. “You can just sit and reflect.” When asked how Jembrana could inspire wellness at The Laguna Bali, her answer is simple: “Use what’s already around us, clove, coconut, vanilla, cocoa. Let nature lead. Let the silence heal.” Jembrana, through Sari’s eyes, is a place where nature, culture, and healing come together. And through her care at Lagoon Spa, she shares a piece of that serenity with every guest.
