EARTH HOUR A NIGHT OF LIGHTS DIMMED FOR A BRIGHTER TOMORROW
A NIGHT FOR EARTH AT THE LAGUNA BALI As we dim the lights around the resort, Arwana Restaurant brings a special focus to sustainability with an exquisite à la carte menu that celebrates the bounty of the ocean while minimizing waste.
Since its beginnings, Earth Hour has symbolized unity in support of our planet through the impactful act of “lights off.” Launched by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 2007, Earth Hour confronts the urgent climate and nature crises and serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting our planet while time still allows. Keeping global warming below the 1.5°C limit and reversing nature loss by 2030 is a shared responsibility, and the years ahead are crucial for ensuring a sustainable future. In solidarity, lights around the resort are dimmed to highlight the natural beauty of the beachfront, honoring the Earth’s gifts. A thematic sand sculpture of endangered animals lies along the shoreline, gently reminding us of the vulnerable wonders we strive to protect. Guests are invited to gather under the stars, enjoying acoustic melodies and shared stories by candlelight, creating a moment to reflect on the planet’s gifts.
This Earth Hour, The Laguna Bali demonstrates how even small acts, like reducing light pollution, can inspire meaningful change. Each step toward sustainability is a step toward a brighter, healthier future for generations to come. small choices—whether on our plates or in our daily lives—can lead to lasting positive impact on our planet. Together, through dimmed lights and thoughtful dining, we honor the Earth and the steps we can take to protect it for future generations.
At the heart of this menu is sustainably sourced barramundi, crafted in partnership with Bali Sustainable Seafood. These barramundi are caught by small-scale artisanal fishermen in Eastern Java, who use traditional, low-impact fishing methods to protect marine life and avoid overfishing. By employing a one-man, one-hook technique, these fishers ensure minimal disruption to the ecosystem, catching only larger fish that help maintain the health of the population.
This zero-waste approach, where every part of the fish is utilized, reflects a commitment to sustainability that aligns with the values of Earth Hour. As guests enjoy this conscious culinary experience by candlelight, under the stars, they are invited to consider how even small choices— whether on our plates or in our daily lives—can lead to lasting positive impact on our planet. Together, through dimmed lights and thoughtful dining, we honor the Earth and the steps we can take to protect it for future generations.
SUSTAINABILITY GLOBAL RECYCLING DAY 2025
TURNING WASTE INTO WONDER: THE LAGUNA BALI’S RECYCLING EFFORTS
LULU THE TURTLE: A SYMBOL OF RECYCLING AND CONSERVATION
At The Laguna, A Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Bali, recycling is not just an action—it is a philosophy deeply embedded in the resort’s identity. In celebration of Global Recycling Day, the resort reflects on its creative and impactful recycling initiatives, showcasing how these efforts honor the environment, support the community, and inspire guests to make a difference. REPURPOSING FOOD TO FIGHT HUNGER As part of its partnership with Scholars of Sustenance Bali (SOS), The Laguna Bali donates surplus food monthly to support those in need. This initiative ensures that wholesome, unused food is repurposed to serve a vital purpose, reducing waste and helping local communities. By extending the lifecycle of food that is still safe to eat, the resort turns potential waste into nourishment, demonstrating that recycling can take many forms—each with a significant impact. RECYCLING WATER FOR LUSH LANDSCAPES The Laguna Bali plays an active role in a pioneering waste management system that has been a hallmark of Nusa Dua for nearly five decades. The resort ensures its wastewater is treated and reused as irrigation for its expansive gardens, contributing to the verdant beauty that defines this iconic destination. Partnering with ITDC’s state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility, The Laguna Bali helps process up to 10,000 cubic meters of water daily, with over 90% repurposed to sustain the lush landscaping of the resort and its surroundings. This initiative showcases the resort’s dedication to safeguarding Bali’s natural beauty and resources for future generations, exemplifying the principles of a circular economy.
Positioned near the beachfront, Lulu the Turtle is more than just a playful recycling bin; it’s a symbol of the interconnectedness of life on the shores of Nusa Dua. Shaped like a turtle, Lulu serves as a constant reminder of the turtles that return to nest on the resort’s beaches each year. The resort celebrates this natural phenomenon by inviting guests to participate in hatchling releases during the nesting season, fostering a deep connection between visitors and the marine ecosystem. Lulu encourages guests to recycle responsibly while raising awareness about ocean conservation.
SALTWATER LAGOON: A SUSTAINABLE OASIS
The Laguna Bali’s iconic saltwater lagoon is not only a picturesque feature but also a testament to innovative recycling practices. Using reverse osmosis technology, the lagoon’s system repurposes seawater for use in the pool. This process efficiently removes dissolved salts, creating a sustainable way to maintain the lagoon while minimizing the resort’s freshwater consumption. A CHANDELIER’S SECOND LIFE In an inspiring homage to sustainability and heritage, the grand chandelier that once illuminated The Laguna Bali’s lobby has found a new purpose. Well before the renovation began, the resort thoughtfully planned how to recycle and repurpose key elements of its design. As a result, the chandelier was deconstructed, and its intricate pieces were carefully integrated into a striking feature wall at the reception lobby. Guests are encouraged to admire this stunning installation, which symbolizes both the resort’s history and its commitment to sustainability.

FROM BULELENG, WITH PRIDE MEET VERINA RENDIZA
Rediscovering Buleleng through the eyes of Verina Rendiza, Director of Quality, offers a glimpse into a region where history, culture, and nature harmonize. For Verina, a proud native of Singaraja, the capital of Buleleng, this regency is a reservoir of cherished memories and inspiration. “Singaraja played such a significant role in Bali’s history, and I feel proud to call it my hometown,” she shares. Once the Dutch colonial capital and the island’s busiest port, Singaraja remains a symbol of Bali’s past. One of its standout landmarks, Klenteng Ling Kwang Kiong—a Chinese temple built in 1873—is etched in her memories. “Every full moon in the ’90s, people would gather there for long-table feasts, music, and dances. It was a festive time that brought everyone together,” she recalls warmly. The flavors of Buleleng are another part of what makes the regency so special to Verina. “A trip to North Bali wouldn’t be complete without Jukut Undis and Sudang Lepet,” she says with a smile.
Jukut Undis, a savory black bean soup, is as comforting as it is nutritious, while Sudang Lepet, crispy salted fish coated in flour, is a labor of love that rewards with every bite.“It takes time to prepare, but the flavors remind me of home and the care that goes into our traditional dishes,” she adds. Buleleng’s natural beauty is equally captivating, especially the untouched paradise of Menjangan Island. “The calmness of the water, the vibrant coral reefs, and the fascinating marine life—it’s breathtaking,” Verina says. “It’s one of those places where you feel completely connected to nature.” The island’s tranquility is mirrored in Buleleng’s cultural gems, such as Gedong Kirtya, Bali’s first lontar manuscript museum. “Walking through its halls is like stepping back in time to the Bali of the 1920s,” she reflects. “It’s a place where history and heritage come alive.” The traditions of Buleleng hold a special place in Verina’s heart, particularly the Ngusaba Bukakak ritual. Held every two years in Giri Emas Village, this ceremony is a vibrant expression of gratitude for the region’s agricultural abundance. “It’s a beautiful tradition that showcases our connection to the land and our appreciation for its fertility,” she says. “Being part of it makes me feel deeply connected to my roots.” As Bali’s southern regions grow increasingly bustling, Verina hopes for a future where Buleleng’s unique charm remains intact. “With more visitors seeking quieter destinations, Buleleng has the potential to shine,” she says thoughtfully. “Improving infrastructure and accessibility will allow more people to discover its wonders while preserving its cultural identity.” Her Buleleng heritage deeply influences her approach to hospitality as the Director of Quality. “I’m passionate about sharing our stories and traditions through meaningful guest experiences,” Verina says. “Buleleng taught me the value of community and connection, and that’s something I bring into everything I do.” For Verina, Buleleng is not just a destination but a timeless treasure that inspires and welcomes those who visit.
