A COMMITMENT TO CARE: BOLD STEPS TOWARD SUSTAINABILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP
Having emerged from a stunning transformation, The Laguna, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Nusa Dua, Bali, stands as a beacon of elegance. But beyond its transformed interiors, the resort is leading the charge in environmental stewardship with a bold new sustainability policy that reflects its dedication to safeguarding the planet for future generations. While other resorts may settle for simply banning plastic water bottles, The Laguna has taken a giant leap forward. In collaboration with its sister property, The St. Regis Bali Resort, and local pioneers Biosystems Indonesia, the resort has constructed a state-of-the-art water bottling plant. This innovation doesn’t just cut down on plastic waste—it creates high-quality drinking water through a process called Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO). This cutting-edge method filters seawater through a nano- membrane ultra-filtration system to deliver pure drinking water, boasting a pH level of 7.19, comparable to world- renowned brands of drinking water.
WATER CONSERVATION • The resort’s water bottling plant uses advanced filtration technology, ensuring that the drinking water meets World Health Organization standards. This facility reflects The Laguna’s dedication to water conservation and plastic waste reduction. SINGLE-USE PLASTICS • The resort has eliminated all single-use plastic water bottles, replacing them with sustainable alternatives across the property. SUSTAINABILITY IN ROOMS • Guests are encouraged to participate in sustainable practices through initiatives such as the promotion of terry cloth reuse and monitoring of laundry services.
F&B SUSTAINABILITY • Free-range eggs and responsibly sourced pork are used across the resort’s dining outlets. • An APEC Food Waste Tracking Mesh helps monitor and reduce food waste, while regular food donations are made to SOS Bali. • The resort’s Sustainable Seafood Program, featuring locally sourced barramundi and tuna, minimizes environmental impact while promoting responsible sourcing. ENGINEERING AND WATER EFFICIENCY • The Laguna uses low-flow fixtures in guest rooms to reduce water consumption. This initiative, combined with over 20 water submeters and efficient irrigation systems, has significantly cut water usage across the resort.
The bottling plant is capable of filling 10,000 glass bottles daily, and its ability to offer both still and and its ability to offer still water, ensuring an elevated guest experience.. The use of locally sourced, recyclable glass bottles sanitized through high-pressure ozone and UV processes ensures that all biological contaminants are removed. Moreover, by producing water on-site, the resort significantly reduces the carbon footprint typically associated with the mass transportation of bottled water. The Laguna’s green initiatives extend beyond its walls. The rapid growth of Bali’s tourism industry has strained the island’s waste management systems, with over 33,000 tons of plastic waste ending up in the sea annually. Recognizing the importance of addressing this challenge, The Laguna has partnered with Sungai Watch, an environmental organization supported by Marriott International Indonesia Business Council. Together, they are working to prevent plastic waste from reaching the ocean by installing barriers at critical points along Bali’s waterways. In another impactful partnership, The Laguna collaborates with the Scholars of Sustenance Foundation (SOS), a Bali- based NGO that provides free meals to those in need. In 2023 alone, the resort donated 6,024 meals, resulting in a CO2 waste reduction of 2,725 kg and saving enough electricity to power a home for 243 days. This year, they’ve already provided nearly 4,000 meals, further cementing their dedication to social responsibility. Central to The Laguna’s sustainability story is Lulu the Turtle—a symbolic recycling bin in the shape of a turtle located on the resort’s pristine beach. Lulu plays a vital role in raising awareness about the local environment, especially given that Bali’s beaches serve as nesting grounds for green turtles, olive ridleys, and hawksbills. Guests are encouraged to discard their recyclable items in Lulu, which are then collected and processed by Plastic Bank Indonesia, providing financial support to nearby communities.
With its commitment to reducing plastic waste, conserving water, supporting local communities, and protecting Bali’s fragile ecosystem, the resort embodies a forward-thinking approach to hospitality that goes beyond aesthetics. The Laguna Bali strives to make the world a better place. As it ushers in a new era of luxury, The Laguna Bali does so with a profound understanding that luxury and sustainability must go hand in hand for the future to thrive.
