The Laguna Times

A COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES For Agus, sustainability is more than an operational goal-it is a personal commitment. Growing up in Indonesia, he witnessed firsthand how small, mindful actions could lead to significant change. Now, leading The Laguna Bali’s sustainability initiatives, he ensures that every decision prioritizes both guest comfort and environmental responsibility. “Global energy resources are limited, and it is crucial that we do our part,” Agus shares. “By integrating sustainable solutions into our daily operations, we can protect the planet while maintaining the highest standards of luxury.”

SUSTAINABILITY IN ACTION Guided by this philosophy, The Laguna Bali has taken significant steps to reduce its environmental impact. Energy efficiency is a core focus, with the resort implementing solar water heaters in villas to harness renewable energy, while LED lighting illuminates spaces with reduced electricity consumption. In guestrooms, advanced Room Control Units (RCU) automatically adjust air conditioning and lighting based on occupancy, ensuring energy is not wasted when rooms are unoccupied. “Technology plays a crucial role in making sustainability effortless,” Agus explains. “With smart systems in place, we reduce unnecessary energy use without compromising guest comfort.” Plastic reduction has also been a major initiative, replacing single-use plastics with more sustainable alternatives. Guestroom keys are now crafted from wood, while glass water bottles have replaced disposable plastic ones. Even the smallest details, such as swapping plastic straws for biodegradable paper straws, contribute to the resort’s larger goal of minimizing plastic waste. To further enhance efficiency, submeters have been installed to monitor water and electricity consumption in real-time, allowing the team to make precise adjustments that maximize conservation. RETHINKING WASTE & WATER MANAGEMENT Water conservation remains a top priority, and The Laguna Bali has introduced innovative solutions to reduce consumption while maintaining the lush beauty of its surroundings. At the heart of these efforts is the resort’s saltwater lagoon system, which significantly minimizes the need for chemical treatments. Instead of relying on artificial purification methods, the lagoon creates a self-sustaining ecosystem that enhances water quality naturally. To further support sustainable water management, the resort recycles treated wastewater for irrigation, ensuring that its tropical gardens flourish without excessive freshwater consumption. Additionally, the introduction of a seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) system has provided an alternative water source that meets the resort’s needs while minimizing its environmental footprint. “Water is one of our most precious resources,” Agus reflects. “By implementing these measures, we are reducing our reliance on traditional water sources while ensuring the resort remains a sanctuary of natural beauty.” Waste reduction is another critical focus, with eco- conscious choices integrated into every aspect of the resort’s operations

From carefully selecting raw materials to controlling purchasing processes, the team ensures that excess waste is kept to a minimum. Leaf waste from the resort’s abundant greenery is composted, returning nutrients to the soil and further closing the loop on sustainability. “It’s about taking responsibility for every stage of the process,” Agus notes. “Sustainability isn’t just about grand gestures—it’s about making thoughtful choices every day.” LOOKING AHEAD The Laguna Bali continues to explore innovative solutions for a more sustainable future. Ongoing initiatives include: • Staff training and sustainability awareness campaigns to reinforce eco-conscious practices. • A targeted 3% reduction in carbon emissions, with plans to install solar panels on the ballroom roof. • A transition from LPG to Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) by 2025, offering a cleaner and more sustainable energy source. “At The Laguna Bali, sustainability is a journey, not a destination,” Agus explains. “By continuously evolving our practices, we ensure that future generations can continue to experience the beauty of Bali.” Through these ongoing efforts, The Laguna Bali continues to lead in sustainable hospitality, preserving the island’s natural beauty for generations to come.
