GIANYAR REGENCY-INSPIRED THE PATTERN

Adorning this edition of Indigenous Bali is a pattern created by artisan Pak Made Wartawan, where repeated triangular shapes mirror the silhouette of a mountain. In Balinese tradition, mountains are revered as sacred spaces, believed to be the home of deities and the source of life-giving waters that flow into rivers and fields. And that is where the inspiration for this pattern came from, the mountain form is more than a natural outline; it carries the meaning of protection, balance, and the bond between people, the natural world, and the divine. The design also draws from wastra, the Balinese term for traditional textiles, where fabric is not merely material but a vessel of belief and cultural expression. By weaving these inspirations together, the pattern reflects how sacred forms and textiles intertwine in Balinese life. Highlighted with prada, or gold detailing, such motifs are used to wrap temple shrines, decorate ceremonial banners, and adorn the costumes of dancers, transforming cloth into a medium of devotion.
