TURNING WASTE INTO WONDER: THE LAGUNA BALI’S RECYCLING EFFORTS

LULU THE TURTLE: A SYMBOL OF RECYCLING AND CONSERVATION

At The Laguna, A Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Bali, recycling is not just an action—it is a philosophy deeply embedded in the resort’s identity. In celebration of Global Recycling Day, the resort reflects on its creative and impactful recycling initiatives, showcasing how these efforts honor the environment, support the community, and inspire guests to make a difference. REPURPOSING FOOD TO FIGHT HUNGER As part of its partnership with Scholars of Sustenance Bali (SOS), The Laguna Bali donates surplus food monthly to support those in need. This initiative ensures that wholesome, unused food is repurposed to serve a vital purpose, reducing waste and helping local communities. By extending the lifecycle of food that is still safe to eat, the resort turns potential waste into nourishment, demonstrating that recycling can take many forms—each with a significant impact. RECYCLING WATER FOR LUSH LANDSCAPES The Laguna Bali plays an active role in a pioneering waste management system that has been a hallmark of Nusa Dua for nearly five decades. The resort ensures its wastewater is treated and reused as irrigation for its expansive gardens, contributing to the verdant beauty that defines this iconic destination. Partnering with ITDC’s state-of-the-art wastewater treatment facility, The Laguna Bali helps process up to 10,000 cubic meters of water daily, with over 90% repurposed to sustain the lush landscaping of the resort and its surroundings. This initiative showcases the resort’s dedication to safeguarding Bali’s natural beauty and resources for future generations, exemplifying the principles of a circular economy.

Positioned near the beachfront, Lulu the Turtle is more than just a playful recycling bin; it’s a symbol of the interconnectedness of life on the shores of Nusa Dua. Shaped like a turtle, Lulu serves as a constant reminder of the turtles that return to nest on the resort’s beaches each year. The resort celebrates this natural phenomenon by inviting guests to participate in hatchling releases during the nesting season, fostering a deep connection between visitors and the marine ecosystem. Lulu encourages guests to recycle responsibly while raising awareness about ocean conservation.

SALTWATER LAGOON: A SUSTAINABLE OASIS

The Laguna Bali’s iconic saltwater lagoon is not only a picturesque feature but also a testament to innovative recycling practices. Using reverse osmosis technology, the lagoon’s system repurposes seawater for use in the pool. This process efficiently removes dissolved salts, creating a sustainable way to maintain the lagoon while minimizing the resort’s freshwater consumption. A CHANDELIER’S SECOND LIFE In an inspiring homage to sustainability and heritage, the grand chandelier that once illuminated The Laguna Bali’s lobby has found a new purpose. Well before the renovation began, the resort thoughtfully planned how to recycle and repurpose key elements of its design. As a result, the chandelier was deconstructed, and its intricate pieces were carefully integrated into a striking feature wall at the reception lobby. Guests are encouraged to admire this stunning installation, which symbolizes both the resort’s history and its commitment to sustainability.
