MEN TEMPEH BETUTU
MEDEWI BEACH Medewi Beach in West Bali has gained international recognition since the 1990s as a top surfing destination. Its long, rolling waves and rocky shoreline create ideal conditions for surfers of all skill levels, drawing wave-chasers worldwide. Beyond surfing, the beach’s natural beauty and relaxed village vibe offer a welcoming retreat. Nearby hotels, restaurants, and surf gear rentals make it a convenient and charming stop along Bali’s west coast.
Since 1978, Ayam Betutu Men Tempeh has stood as an iconic culinary destination in West Bali. Founded by Men Tempeh, a Gianyar native who brought her family recipe to Gilimanuk, the restaurant has evolved from a simple food stall into a beloved dining spot welcoming generations of locals and travelers. The signature dish, Ayam Betutu, features young free-range chicken slow-cooked in basa genep, a rich Balinese spice blend. Tender and infused to the bone, it’s served with vibrant sambals, crispy peanuts, plecing gondo, and warm rice.
GUARDIANS OF NATURE
BUNUT BOLONG
KURMA ASIH SEA TURTLE CONSERVATION Founded in 1997 in Perancak, Kurma Asih leads efforts to protect Bali’s endangered turtles. Once hunted by local fishermen, turtle populations declined sharply until founder I Wayan Tirtha shifted focus to conservation and raising awareness across Bali.
In the misty highlands of Manggisari, West Bali, stands Bunut Bolong, a centuries-old bunut tree with a remarkable hole at its center. The term “bunut” refers to this tree type, and “bolong” means hole, describing a natural tunnel large enough for vehicles to pass through. Often shrouded in fog, the tree’s majestic form and spiritual significance create a magical and almost otherworldly atmosphere.
JUWUK MANIS
PECANGAKAN PARK
Juwuk Manis Waterfall provides a refreshing natural escape. Though modest in height, its twin cascades offer a cooling rush and tranquil charm, perfect for a dip or quiet reflection. The name means “sweet water” in Balinese, an apt description after a scenic walk through lush surroundings. This hidden gem is a favored weekend retreat for locals seeking a peaceful pause from daily life.
Located on Jln. Jendral Sudirman in Negara, Pecangakan Park features a striking Lord Ruci statue surrounded by a colorful fountain with evening “dancing fountain” shows. The park also showcases statues of wayang characters and a historical inscription from the Japanese occupation, making it a cultural and community hub.
