MORE THAN A GAME HOW CATHEDRAL ATHLETICS BUILDS CHARACTER AND COMMUNITY HABITS OF LEADERSHIP

by Daniel Tesfai, Director of Athletics, and Sam Dossick, Assistant Director of Athletics

AT CATHEDRAL SCHOOL FOR BOYS, athletics isn’t just something we do in the afternoons. It’s part of who we are. From the first moments on the soccer field in Kindergarten to the final buzzer of a Grade 8 basketball playoff, boys at Cathedral are learning how to show up — for themselves and for each other.

The purpose of our program is simple: every boy plays. With a no-cut policy, balanced teams, and inclusive coaching, we give all students the chance to grow as athletes and teammates, no matter their skill level or previous experience. We’ve seen time and again that when boys feel they belong, they’re willing to take risks, put in effort, and discover what they’re capable of. OUR ATHLETICS OFFERINGS FALL: CROSS COUNTRY (GRADES 5–8) SOCCER (KINDERGARTEN–GRADE 8) CLUB GOLF (GRADES 7–8) WINTER: BASKETBALL (KINDERGARTEN–GRADE 8) SPRING: BASEBALL (KINDERGARTEN–GRADE 8) CLUB GOLF (GRADES 5–8) TRACK AND FIELD (GRADES 5–8) VOLLEYBALL (GRADES 6–8)

In Grade 3, boys step into interscholastic play. With more structured coaching and after- school practices, they begin to experience what it means to work toward a shared goal. We offer multiple teams whenever numbers allow and build rosters that prioritize balanced competition. Whether it’s soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter, or track and field in the spring, we help boys learn how to improve, support their teammates, and show respect for the game and for each other. By the time they reach the Upper School, students have developed not just athletic skills but leadership habits. Boys play in leagues like BAIAL and CYO, where competition is stronger and expectations are higher. Some
