HABITS OF CHARACTER

by Ghilly DeYoung and Will Jaggers, Lower and Upper School Visual Arts Teachers ART IS A LANGUAGE ALL BOYS CAN SPEAK. At Cathedral School for Boys, the visual arts program invites every student to create, explore, and reflect. FROM IMAGINATION TO INSIGHT HOW CATHEDRAL BOYS GROW THROUGH THE ARTS

In the Lower School, the curriculum centers on materials, techniques, and experimentation. Boys learn how to use line, shape, color, and texture to express ideas and emotions. They explore artists from around the world and throughout history. They also develop visual literacy, i.e., the ability to make and interpret meaning through images. In the Upper School, projects become more complex. Students study design, composition, and critique. They engage in long-term work that blends imagination with insight. They explore identity, current events, and community through different media. We guide them in developing a personal voice and the skills to share it. Our goal is not to train professional artists. It is to help boys see the world more clearly, appreciate beauty, and trust their own perspective. Each boy’s creative voice grows louder and clearer. By Grade 8, he is confident in who he is and ready to speak through his work.
