ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
compete, and collaborate at a high level. These are not just students who play instruments. These are musicians who take risks, work hard, and support one another. We rehearse four times a week in sectional and full-band formats. We explore jazz, classical, funk, and pop. We teach improvisation, ensemble skills, and music theory. Just as important, we teach how to stay calm under pressure, how to give and receive feedback, and how to celebrate progress rather than perfection. Our concerts are celebrations, not just of sound but of growth. The eighth graders know how far they’ve come. The fourth graders get a glimpse of what’s possible. And the audience sees something remarkable: a room full of boys becoming themselves, one note at a time. Band is more than an elective. It’s a place to take chances, work hard, and make something together. Every boy, whether he’s just learning how to hold a trumpet or taking a solo in front of a crowd, finds his voice.
Steve Coronado has taught Grade 4–8 Band at Cathedral School for Boys since 2022. A native Texan, he holds a B.A. in instrumental music education from Texas Woman’s University. Before joining Cathedral, he taught and coached band programs across Texas.
