HABITS OF CHARACTER
MORE THAN MOVEMENT HOW CATHEDRAL P.E. BUILDS SKILLS FOR LIFE
by Jason Thomas, Lower School Physical Education Teacher
WHEN CATHEDRAL BOYS WALK INTO THE GYM, they’re not just here to play. They’re here to grow.
In Lower School P.E., movement is more than physical. It’s personal. We use activity to help boys develop courage, self-awareness, resilience, and empathy. From Kindergarten through Grade 4, our goal is to help every boy build a healthy, confident relationship with fitness that will stay with him for life.
The program follows a clear and intentional arc. We begin with basic movement patterns like hopping, skipping, and navigating space. From there, we introduce foundational skills such as throwing, catching, and striking. Eventually, boys learn to apply these abilities in group games that require strategy, cooperation, and friendly competition. As they progress,
they also learn to manage energy, work with others, and respond to setbacks in constructive ways. We focus on the process, not perfection. Boys are encouraged to try new things, support one another, and reflect on their own growth. Whether they’re playing in a soccer game, practicing yoga, or learning a new game from another culture, they gain confidence through experience, often through moments of challenge. For many boys, P.E. is also where they first understand what it means to be part of a team. They learn to pass the ball
