they recognised what had previously stopped them speaking. Their strategic thinking became grounded in a clearer sense of purpose rather than simply producing another plan. None of the delegates will leave with all the answers. Leadership is a lifelong practice. What they did leave with was something much more valuable: a deeper understanding of themselves, a clearer picture of who they are at their best, and practical ways of returning to that version of themselves when it matters most. In the end, that’s what SELF is really about. Because the more often we can lead from the best of who we are, the greater the impact we have on the people, the family and the business that depend on us.

Perhaps the simplest idea on the programme has also proved to be one of the most powerful. How we are in any given moment often matters more than what we know. When we’re tired, anxious or emotionally triggered, even years of experience can become difficult to access. Conversely, when we’re in a resourceful state – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually – we’re far more able to draw on our judgement, experience and skills. Understanding our own patterns means we’re less likely to be hijacked by them. And that brings us back to SELF As delegates became clearer about themselves, something else began to shift. They understood their business context more deeply because they weren’t viewing everything through old assumptions. They approached challenging situations with greater perspective. They had more courageous conversations because

strengths that are already developed or come naturally to us. Family businesses often encourage people to become well-rounded leaders, but we’ve found that the greatest contribution usually comes from understanding where your natural strengths already create exceptional value. Every strength, however, has the potential to cast a shadow, for example: Being driven and courageous can mean you are overly direct and inclined to offend people. Being positive, enthusiastic and problem-solving orientated can also mean being overly optimistic and inclined to lose interest. Being good at attention to detail may mean losing sight of the big picture and not being able to prioritise. Learning to recognise when our strengths are tipping into less helpful behaviours allows us to choose our response more consciously, rather than simply reacting.
