and Insiders on Tour, which offer behind-the-scenes experiences at local attractions and businesses. Visit OKC selects tour locations across different districts to introduce participants to a range of places throughout the city. Locations generally are not repeated unless there is something new to experience, such as a major update or expansion. The OKC Insider course replaced the Certified Tourism Ambassador program, with the free, online format designed to remove barriers and make training accessible to more people who regularly interact with visitors. Visit OKC is also developing additional modules in response to participants asking for more content. Graduates receive access to hundreds of free professional development courses through Learn Tourism. Ultimately, the program is designed to turn local knowledge into authentic hospitality, giving more people the confidence to answer a familiar question: “What is there to do here?” Those interested in becoming a certified OKC Insider can learn more and complete the free training at visitokc.com/insider.
A visitor looking for the best place to grab dinner, explore a neighborhood or spend an afternoon in Oklahoma City may ask a hotel employee for advice. But they might just as easily ask someone working at a store, venue or airport. Visit OKC’s Insider Program is designed to make sure more of those people have an answer. The free, on-demand training gives people who interact with visitors the knowledge and confidence to recommend local attractions, districts, restaurants and experiences. While initially focused on hospitality and tourism workers, the program is now open to a broader range of participants, including retail employees, venue staff, airport workers and local volunteers. “When someone visits Oklahoma City, their experience is shaped by every interaction they have along the way,” said Shaun Yates, Visit OKC senior vice president of tourism development. “The Insider Program helps give people across our community the knowledge and confidence to answer questions, make meaningful recommendations and connect visitors with the places and experiences that make Oklahoma City special. It’s about making sure great hospitality extends well beyond the traditional tourism industry.” The program consists of four online modules that take about 60 minutes to complete and cover Oklahoma City history, districts, food and top attractions.
