T he Averitt team is special for many reasons. Our associates are committed to doing things the right way, and we put forth our best effort each day with pride and professionalism. Simply put, we’re cut from the same cloth. One way we show our culture of professionalism is through our uniforms. When customers see the Averitt Red, they know they’re working with a partner that’s a cut above. They can clearly see how we set the standard. Whether you’ve been with Averitt for several decades or several weeks, I want to thank you for helping us build on our professional standard. Because that helps us deliver excellence now, and it’s setting us up to enjoy an even brighter future together.

Thank you to our Dallas team for hosting this year’s catalog photoshoot.

It takes more than a uniform to create a

It takes more than a shared goal. More than a common purpose. It takes a little something … special. A shared character. A shared attitude. Building a focused, high-functioning team takes a group of people who are all cut from the same cloth. Which is precisely what we have here at Averitt. It has nothing to do with someone’s background. After all, our associates have stories as diverse and varied as the shades in a summer sunset. But you also have something more. You have an inner spark – a shared passion – that helps us blend together into one wonderful, cohesive whole. That passion is the common thread that ties our company together. Because a great team isn’t made by uniforms. It’s made by the people who wear them.

Your performance shouldn’t be the only thing attracting attention. Reflective elements on your uniform can make you more visible, which can help keep you and others safer on the job. That’s why associates can choose from several shirts and outerwear items with pre-equipped reflective elements, some of which can be seen here.

Because job one of being safe is being seen.

Yes, it’s the people inside the uniforms who make our team so special. But a sharp, professional outer appearance certainly doesn’t hurt. Here are a few guidelines to make sure we’re all putting our best foot forward.

For all the common attributes our associates share – the passion, the commitment to excellence, the appreciation for their fellow team members – they each have a unique story to tell. It’s this weaving together of many different threads that creates the fabric of our company.

With the right attitude and the right opportunities, the sky really is the limit. And that pretty much sums up Domitilo’s entire career mindset. He started with Averitt in 2005 as a part-time dock associate, then became a full-time associate two years later. “From there, I wanted to learn how to drive,” he says. “So I learned how to be a hostler on the yard. Once I got that down, I saw road driving as the next move. Since Averitt provided the opportunities and the tools, I took advantage of it. And here I am.” But that change represents only part of his overall journey. “I always liked learning different roles within the company,” he says. “I started working our outbound shift and getting to know the operation. But it always intrigued me how we load our routes on the inbound side. So I started learning how to route, and how to load by sequences. I was always curious about how the whole operation ran. I want to learn all the aspects – how to run the outbound and inbound, how to become a driver, everything. I think it would all help me in becoming a frontline leader here one day.” That kind of can-do attitude is what keeps him moving forward. “When I started here, the first thing that attracted me was the competitive pay. Then little by little, you learn about the culture and how they treat people here. It’s not just a job – it can be a career. And I like that. Averitt likes to promote from within and you see a lot of people moving up. I like knowing that you can do more, that there are different opportunities and that you’re not just stuck in a dead-end job. It’s all up to you. The possibilities are limitless.” You won’t often run across someone who describes eight years of driving 45-foot motor coaches as their “part-time fun job on the weekends.” But that’s exactly how Joe Ramsey views it. His primary job during that period was driving for another major carrier. But even then, he had his eye on Averitt. “When you’re out driving, you see Averitt almost everywhere,” he says. “And my dad always told me, if you see a company with that much activity, that’s a company you need to be with. It’s a sign of a strong company that’s going to be around for a while.” Still, signing on was easier said than done. “In New Orleans, where I was, they never had any openings because they never had any turnover. So I moved to Dallas just so I could sign on with Averitt. I lived in Dallas for seven years” – during which he also served a stint with On Tour Logistics – “then I transferred back to New Orleans.” When it comes to the qualities that still make Averitt attractive after all this time, one thing stands above the others. “Let me tell you, it’s the people. I don’t care what service center I go to, I’ve never had a problem with anything. The people are friendly everywhere. Tell you the truth, I love being at work more than I love being anywhere. Because I get to laugh and clown with everyone. I’m a people person, so I love it.” When he says he enjoys a laugh, he means it. “I remember when I was scheduled to meet Mr. Sasser at Atlanta East. I’d never met him before, and I wanted to get a picture. So I just went up to him and said, ‘Come take a picture with me. I’ll make you famous.’ ”

If there’s anyone who embodies the phrase “helping out where you’re needed,” it’s Dajae . She’d spent close to a decade moving between multiple freight companies when a former coworker (and new member of the Averitt team) encouraged her to apply here. Her first reaction? “I didn’t want to move anymore,” she says. But she followed up and had a call back the following week. “And I couldn’t pass it up.” Although she originally signed on as a dock associate, she quickly found herself wearing multiple hats. When the team was short a yard driver, she leveraged her earlier driving experience and filled in as a backup hostler. Then as a backup freight clerk. Then as a billing backup in the office – all while still working on the dock. “It’s partly because I just catch on quick, but it’s also about being helpful and nice to people,” she says. “I try to help out wherever I can.” Not that it didn’t get a bit hectic. “I decided to take the Dock-to-Driver program just to relax!” When asked what attracted her to Averitt in the first place, she doesn’t hesitate. “It was clean. And I mean clean with a capital ‘C.’ I’ve been some places where you go home and the dirt and grime just falls right off you.” But that was only part of the story. “Really, it’s the people that make it different. I think no matter where you work, you can either be happy or you can be miserable. Which one do you want to be? Here, everybody’s just smiling. Sure, you’ll have some angry faces, but you just have to keep a good attitude. Because somebody might be dealing with something worse than you. You need to pass on the good energy to people who otherwise aren’t feeling it.” When it comes to landing on a career, most can just tell when they’ve found the right fit. And that’s certainly true of Kenney Brown. “I’ve been driving for over 30 years,” he says. “And the last 23 of those have been with Averitt.” He was driving with a foodservice company back in 1999 when he decided to look for a better opportunity. “Averitt had it, and I came aboard. It’s been a fun ride ever since.” When it comes to the reasons for his long tenure, he cites many of the same factors you may have heard before. “Well, the environment we work in, first and foremost. It’s just a great place to work,” he says. “The culture is different – you’re not just a number. And the equipment is some of the nicest in the industry, hands down. Not to mention that we all look pretty sharp in these uniforms.” But he doesn’t stop there. “When I’m recruiting someone to Averitt, I tell them about the great pay structure, great benefit plan, and great retirement plan. Those are pretty good selling points.” When not spending time with his wife, two grown kids, and four grandchildren, he enjoys tracking his car on a road course whenever he can. “I have a Corvette,” he says. “It’s a Z06, 650 horsepower straight from the factory. People ask me all the time, ‘Have you done anything to it?’ I mean, I can’t even use what they gave me. So what am I going to do to it?”

Sometimes you look for opportunities, and sometimes opportunities look for you. Joseph Anderson has experience on both ends of that spectrum. After moving from Mississippi to Tennessee, he was working at a pharmaceutical distribution center in Memphis when he got the itch to look around. “I was looking for a forklift job and saw an opening online with Averitt. It seemed like a perfect fit for me. I applied, and I’ve been here ever since.” But that’s only part of the story. “After a while on the dock, I asked if I could go out on the yard to help move trailers around. I wanted to learn and grow a bit more in the company. So while I was still working the dock, they let me go out and start hostling.” It’s here that you might say fate played a hand. “I’d been working the dock for maybe three years. We had a cookout where an associate came up and asked me, ‘Are you a driver?’ And I said, ‘No ma’am, I’m not.’ And she said, ‘You look like you ought to be a driver.’ For some reason that stuck with me, and after praying about it, I decided to go for it. I studied for my CDL while I was still working the dock and hostling. Averitt actually let me use one of their tractors to get my CDL. The door just swung open for me to drive from that point on. It was awesome.” After five years of driving, he still feels the same energy. “I like the city, it keeps me going,” he says. “I like never knowing what you’re going to do next. Because you’re not always doing the same thing or seeing the same freight. It helps keep the job interesting. You’re like, ‘Oh wow, I just delivered a whole lawnmower, or an ATV, or whatever.’ It just keeps you on your toes. Plus, you get to meet new customers, new people – it’s just a wonderful thing to do. It keeps you moving.” Michael Hubbard has always enjoyed driving. And he had his eyes set on Averitt early on. “I started out driving box trucks delivering water,” he says. “But I always wanted to work for Averitt. I knew they had a good local work, and the bright red trucks really attracted me.” As a dad to two young boys – one with autism – staying close to home was a must. Still, his first attempt didn’t go as smoothly as he might have hoped. “I went to the Averitt in Birmingham to apply, but they said I needed a CDL. I was like, ‘What’s a CDL?’” Luckily that hiccup was quickly fixed, and after securing his commercial driver’s license, he built his experience by working with other carriers. “Then Averitt called and said they had something local. Which is exactly what I was looking for.” Even though he’s still fairly new to the team, he’s already found several qualities that distinguish Averitt from his other tenures. “The communication is a lot better here,” he says. “When you have a question, you’re connecting with people who have the experience and knowledge to help you out. “They also don’t leave you hanging out to dry. I had an issue with my tractor once, and within 10 minutes somebody was helping me fix the situation. At Mercedes we have to move fast – because if parts aren’t in the right place at the right time, everything stops.” When it comes to recruiting, he’s not shy to share his take on the team. “I’ve put the word out to a few people,” he says. “I tell them the equipment’s nice and the benefits are good. I’ve also referred people who’ve approached me because of the uniform. They come up and say, ‘I thought you guys wore red.’”

It’s common to hear associates describe their fellow team members as a family. But for Walinda Brown, that description takes on a new meaning. Before joining Averitt, she was working in a warehouse managing an appliance refurbishment program. But she longed to get back to working freight – a role she’d previously held for close to three years. “After I applied with Averitt, I was really excited,” she says. “I got the call, did the interview, and everything was great. Then I found out my cousin (Dajae Williams) had applied for the exact same job. We started a week apart!” What attracted her to Averitt? It was largely what she heard about other carriers. “I knew people who worked other places, and I didn’t hear a lot of good things. I kept hearing that there wasn’t room to move up, or other positions to move between. So I thought, ‘well, let me try Averitt.’ I looked it up, looked at the reviews, and I’m not going to kid you – the reviews were great.” Since joining, one of the main things she’s noticed is how much everyone looks out for everyone else. “You just see a lot of teamwork. You feel like people actually care. You really don’t find that at too many other places. Like with the uniform – some places, the leaders are the only ones wearing a uniform. But here, it’s everyone. It makes you feel different. It makes you feel upbeat.” And speaking of family, there’s now a generational aspect to the Averitt appreciation. “When my granddad saw that ‘Averitt’ on my shirt, he said ‘I see those trucks rolling all the time.’ So he pulled out his phone, said, ‘hey Google,’ and pulled up all the locations. He told me, ’yeah, that company’s everywhere.’ As if I didn’t know it!” For some people, nothing compares to the draw of the open road. Michael Wambles is one of those people. “I started driving when I was 18,” he says. “Before that I tried working in a couple of factories – one lasted a week, and the other lasted maybe two months. Me and ‘working inside a building’ don’t get along. So I drove trucks for a few companies before joining Averitt in ’99.” Although he was familiar with Averitt and had spoken to several drivers, he still had to wait his turn before signing up. “Back then it was really hard to get on here,” he says. “There was just no turnover. It took me close to three months to get hired.” He started in Truckload and chipped in periodically on Dedicated. “But when they started OTL, I thought, ‘I’m going to give this a shot.’ I was in the original class. We had our first tour in early 2014.” Since then, he’s driven for a lot of different shows – but one thing remains the same regardless of the audience. “Most people don’t realize what it takes to put on a show every night,” he says. “They show up to a concert, and it’s all there ready to go. They don’t realize it all just got there that morning. Everything gets unloaded and set up, and as soon as the show’s over, everything gets torn down. Two hours after the show, we’re loaded up and heading out for the next city.” As for what’s kept him on board for nearly a quarter century? “Averitt’s been good to me for 23 years. I mean, I’ve never had to worry about a paycheck. I’ve never had to worry whether I’m going to work tomorrow. Between the benefits, the pay, and the stability of knowing it’s a debt-free company, I’m not going anywhere.”

By following a few simple laundering tips, you can help ensure that we all look like part of a polished, professional team.

CATCH STAINS EARLY Stains are an inevitable part of the job. But they don’t have to slow you down. Check your clothes for stains after each use. If you notice any, get it in the wash right away. The longer a stain sits, the harder it is to remove.

SKIP THE POWDERS Whenever possible, avoid using powdered laundry detergents. Many contain corrosive chemicals that can break fabric down over time and can even cause colors to fade and run. KEEP IT COOL Always opt for cold water when washing your uniform. Not only does it preserve colors and

help minimize shrinking, but it also gets clothes just as clean as warmer water. DON’T TOSS EVERYTHING IN TOGETHER Washing your shirts with heavier items like jeans and pants not only increases the number of wrinkles, but it can also shorten the life of the garment. Whenever possible, wash heavier items separately.

AIR-DRY WHEN YOU CAN A commercial dryer can damage fabrics over time. So when you have the option, use a clothesline or drying rack instead. (If an air dryer is a must, don’t overdo it – remove your clothes while they’re still slightly damp to avoid shrinking.) FLIP THINGS AROUND Turning your garments inside out before washing not only helps prevent fading, but it also helps preserve embroidered and printed elements.

Don’t let anything stain your

Repair or Recycle?

Sure, there are ways to lengthen the useful life of your uniform. But nothing lasts forever. Learn how to tell when your trusty garments have reached the end of the road.

Stains may be a fact of life. But living with them doesn’t have to be. By following these proven tips and tricks for removing some of the more common offenders, you can keep your uniform – and your reputation – looking its best.

DIESEL FUEL Splashes happen. When they do, hang the soiled garment outside to avoid having the odors spread. If there’s a significant amount of fuel, hose the garment off, wring it out (wearing rubber gloves), and let it hang outside for at least 24 hours. Once the smell is gone, it’s safe to put it in the washing machine. Set the machine for the largest possible load and use the hottest water the garment will tolerate. Add 1/4 cup of ammonia and a little extra laundry detergent and wash as usual. Only after the smell or stain is completely gone is it safe to put the garment in the dryer.

REPAIR STAINED COLLAR

Try pretreating the collar with shampoo. Keep it from happening again by wearing it only once between washes. STAINS UNDER THE ARM Dissolve a few denture-cleansing tablets in a bowl of warm water or try OxiClean. MISSING BUTTONS Grab that needle and thread and channel your inner tailor. EXCHANGE OR RECYCLE FRAYED COLLAR Typically, it’s not worth the time or money to have a collar repaired. FRAYED CUFFS Replacing the cuffs can cost just as much as buying an entirely new shirt. Save yourself the time and trouble. FADED COLOR It’s tough to make a bold impression in a washed-out shirt. If your Averitt red has faded to a pinkish hue, it’s time to upgrade your wardrobe.

TIP: You could also use 2 cups of vinegar to help eliminate the odor.

OIL & GREASE There are a few approaches that work well for removing these stubborn stains. One solution is to coat the area with cornstarch, let it soak between 30 minutes and an hour, then launder with heavy-duty detergent. Another approach is to spray some WD-40 on the stain and let it sit for about 30 minutes. Then rub a little dish soap on the area and wash it as normal. BLOOD First off, make sure no one needs medical attention. Then, if the bloodstain is only 10 to 15 minutes old, rinse it under a lot of cold water while rubbing the fabric against itself. Then wash as normal. If it’s an older stain, drench it in cold water, then soak it in a bucket with water and an enzyme-based stain remover like OxiClean. COFFEE & SODA Don’t let your pick-me-up bring you down. Presoak the garment in a solution of liquid laundry detergent and cool water (about 2 tablespoons of detergent to 1 gallon of water) for at least 30 minutes. Then launder in warm or hot water. After soaking for another 10 minutes or so, wash as normal in cold water. FLIP THINGS AROUND Turning your garments inside out before washing not only helps prevent fading, but it also helps preserve embroidered and printed elements.

MEASURE TWICE. ORDER ONCE.

A great look is built

Even though you may know your standard size, it’s always a good idea to take your measurements before ordering your uniform items. Styles and fabrics (not to mention bodies) can change from one year to the next.

WOMEN

MEN

BUST: Measure under the arms and around the fullest part of the bust. WAIST: Measure around the narrowest part of the natural waistline (just above the hip bones). HIPS:

NECK: Measure around the base of the neck, where a collared shirt would fit. CHEST:

at a time.

Measure across the fullest part of the chest, under the arms and across the back. WAIST: Measure over the shirt at the waistline, where pants are normally worn. Tighten the tape as snug as you prefer your pants to fit. INSEAM: Measure from the inseam to the top of the shoe.

Measure around the fullest part of the hips (normally 7” to 8” below the natural waistline). SLEEVE LENGTH: Measure from the center of the outside collar over the shoulder, around the elbow, to the point where the sleeve should end (usually the bottom of the wrist bone).

They might be the last things you put on in the morning, but your shoes should still be a high priority. Not only do they complete the uniform, but they can also go a long way toward improving your safety and comfort on the job.

GIVE DIRT A SWIFT KICK. It’s easy to overlook your shoes when you’re on the job. But they’re an important part of presenting a professional, uniform appearance. Make sure they’re black, clean, free from scuffs, and in good repair. Also, even though you don’t have to buy them through Averitt, your work shoes should still meet certain parameters. (No cowboy boots, loafers, or sneakers.)

TIP: If you don’t have a measuring tape, mark your measurements on a piece of string or yarn and measure it against a yardstick or fabric measuring tape.
