WINTER 2022/2023

2023 NEW YEAR – NEW ACTIONS

The key is to enjoy the journey and not become overwhelmed. Take time to look around and appreciate your efforts. I am always kind of amused when taking the Q subway line on 83rd street with the long escalator down. Most New Yorkers cannot enjoy the ride down. They’re running down the moving escalator to run to the train to run to work and so on and so on. Maybe a little chillaxin is in order. As in chilling and relaxing. You may have noticed in the practice we pretty much always run-on time. Hamster dentistry is not a good thing for you nor for me the hamster. Why are New Yorkers always running? Where are they running to? Somewhere over the rainbow. So, time to decide and step up to the plate. Seems Mr. Judd just stepped up to 360 million – now that’s a plate. Are you spinning your wheels for another year or heading to a destination? Either way moving or spinning I’m glad to have you as part of the practice. At our practice, we like teeth and the people attached to them. Wishing you a Prosperous New Year and Luke don’t forget to use the floss. Health and Happiness!

Sometimes you will have to pay for the information which is much better than reinventing the wheel. Now that you have decided and made your plan the final and most important step is to take action. Procrastination is the killer of dreams. Better to start and make a wrong turn and correct than to never begin. Never beginning means certain failure. Your aspirations can be large or small. There is no correct answer, just your answer. Then it’s one step at a time. You don’t need to chunk it all down at once. With each success celebrate your win. You need to give yourself positive reinforcement to keep you moving forward. You will always have to overcome road blocks and you will need to weave and be flexible. If something doesn’t work change your approach and the correction will make you stronger. You learn more from your mistakes than your successes. When you succeed you can celebrate but when you err, you’ll ponder, learn, correct and move on. Perseverance is critical for success. You must persevere. You have to remain involved and not be on autopilot. Sometimes as you progress your journey will secure a new destination which you did not even realize was possible when you began. The journey is always more important than the final destination.

When you wish upon a Star your Dreams come True says Jiminy Cricket. Have you ever seen a cricket if so, your dream is for it to go away or squish it. In fact, a star is very hot in a very cold environment so not that hospitable. OK enough with the rambling; What’s it all about Alfie? I said enough. Well it’s a new year and that means a new beginning. Where do you want to be in 2024. If you want to be there you better make a plan now otherwise you’re chance of getting there is slim to none. You don’t want to be a canoe on a swiftly moving river where you’ll arrive only where the current takes you; which might not be where you want to be. You want to be in control with a firm paddle to maneuver. First you need to decide what you want. What are you willing to do and what are you not? You’re not going to get somewhere if you don’t have a plan. How can you possibly succeed if you do not know what you want? So first you need to decide. Now that you’ve decided you need to formulate a plan. To make a plan you need information. The good thing is whatever you want to do there is information out there to help you. You just have to make the effort to go out and find it.

LIONS, TIGERS AND BEARS OH MY OR IN NEW YORK CITY Bagels, Pizza and Pastrami OH MY waist is growing

Give you pickles and cold slaw at the table. More convenient, less noisy, more refined and the fries are still very good. Finally, on the Upper East Side where I live, there’s Pastrami Queen – and she’s no queen. You can’t eat here they have like three tables so you have to take out. The pastrami is acceptable but by the time you get it home solidification happens. However, the guys serving are the best and always friendly. As for California you want some pastrami – keep walking. There was Jerry’s Famous Deli but famous no more actually all eight locations are closed. Ran into Larry David and the Hof there but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

Let’s Talk Pastrami – when done well it’s beyond satisfying. The Pastrami champion – Katz’s Deli – not conveniently located. Still with the annoying paper tickets but oh the wonder. Of course, you have to go when no one else is going. Think mid-week around 4 PM. No lines here and you can just walk in. Not empty but extremely tolerable. Those in the know head all the way to the back and make a right. This is the private area only real New Yorker’s know about. Waiter service required – no skimping here to save a tip and standing in line. Next up Ben’s Delicatessen – midtown Macy’s area not glamorous but the pastrami is good, not as good as Katz’s but no slouch either. More of a restaurant setting.

WINE For some to think, they need to drink. Humans have been drinking for thousands of years. We all need water but sometimes we prefer something stronger. Wine is an alternative. Having resided in California for 23 years and California being the US wine capital I’ve partaken. In Cali there was a wine chain called Bev Mo meaning the dumping ground of California wineries. When the northern California wineries had too much product, they dumped them here. Even the most expensive wines were dirt cheap or cheaper here. So, on some cold winter night where you might need some inner warmth or after a hard week of output and you need to relax and celebrate here are three of my favorites. Your liver requests that you don’t overdue it and imbibe in moderation and at the price of these bottles moderation is the key. For a Cabernet Sauvignon I have always liked Silver Oak the Napa Valley one versus the Alexander Valley.

you have to order directly from Sonoma and have it shipped. They do ship single bottles and many times without shipping fees. One of the fun things we did in California was going up North to San Francisco for a weekend and then out to Napa. Over the years I actually met many of the proprietors of the vineyards up there. Hard to believe but true. To be able to go to their big houses sit outside on their veranda overlooking the winery while enjoying a glass of their creations under a clear sky and right temperature can bring true bliss.

They all are good and the older are even better. When you taste a wine more than 10 years old, they seem to feel thicker and more mellow but even the five-year- old vintages are just fine. For a Barolo Damilano Cannuli 2016 is quite good. Of course, the Barolo is from Italy but with some cheese, olives and bread you can almost imagine you’re on the Coast of Italy enjoying the view and sun of the Mediterranean. The Queen of Pinot Noir is Merry Edwards who has been turning them out for decades. It really does not matter which varietal of hers you choose. They are all good but impossible to get here in New York meaning

So choose a wine and enjoy.

PRESSURE

As another New Yorker said: What does it mean? I’ll tell you what it means Pressure Don’t ask for help your all alone Pressure Living in New York running around, under the gun always late Pressure Can be overwhelming and who gets it, your teeth do.

When you have departed reality and are unconscious at night, your jaw muscles are experiencing your mind’s internal video. Clenching and grinding to relieve the stress from a New York life.

Meaning, your night guard has to coincide with all these movements. You need a professional and sorry, you’re not that professional. You are better off with no night guard than purchasing a do it yourself one at the drug store. Of course, the best solution is to tackle your pressure. But you’re in a pressure cooker so you’re going to have to be proactive and positive. Meditation, exercise, proper eating and a positive outlook where you’re not the victim mindset will be required. Not to worry if the pressure is still there come on in and we’ll help give your teeth and muscles relief. Your brain, teeth and muscles will thank you and then you can thank me. Your dental insurance plan might even cover half the expense especially if your employer is applying PRESSURE. GAME OF TIME Yes, he did and I’ve read it all. Actually pretty, pretty good and amazing when you think about it. “Lord of the Rings” was only 1,000 pages long so he wrote a novel five times longer. When he finished book four, he said book five would come out one year later. It actually came out six years later but who’s counting? RR predicted book six would soon arrive but we’re still waiting. Now the wait ends with it finally coming out in the fall of 2023, twelve years later. There is a book seven but at this rate RRM at 74 years of age and GOT will probably not be alive if it takes him another 24 years to finish it based on his previous trajectory. The last four seasons of “Game of Thrones” has not been written in the books so what actually happens is still a mystery. HBO producers came up with something but they are not Martin and the show finally was disappointing. RR says his book will differ from the produced shows so there’s hope if and when the final tome is finally published.

Your teeth are yelling, somebody help me. Well, that somebody can be me.

If you awake in the morning and the sides of your head ache. If your jaw muscles are sore and if your teeth feel like they have been through the war. You need to take action and come on in to our office where we can make you a night guard to relieve the pressure being placed on your teeth. You may ask why do I need to see you. For a lot less I can go to the Duane Reader and buy a night guard. Not a good choice. Do you realize that all joints in your body only move in one direction or one plane while your jaw joint is a three-way joint. The only one in your body. It moves forward/back, side to side and up and down.

If you’ve got the time, we’ve got the beer – wrong topic. We’re talking “Game of Thrones” here – like the HBO show. Did you know that George RR Martin wrote 5,000 pages?
