Domestic Under 18 Residents Residents who are under 18 are welcome and cared for in our student living communities. Student Living have additional duty of care requirements for our under-18 residents, and we take our responsibilities seriously. Student Living provide initial pastoral care services with dedicated support officers providing Regular Check-in meetings and addressing any concerns. Strongly supported by our Safe and Fair Community Unit (SaFCU), this team provides further avenues for reporting matters of concern, including the University’s mandatory reporting obligations. The University provides a free and confidential counselling service for enrolled students, through the Personal Counselling Service. This service is also available to those students who are under the age of 18. Parent/Guardian permission must be obtained for the resident to attend off-campus activities and a resident under the age of 18 will not be permitted to attend any overnight activity unless accompanied by a parent or guardian. University community members who are engaged in an activity, as a normal part of their duties, in which they have more than incidental contact with a person under the age of 18, must hold a current Registration to Work with Vulnerable People. The Student Living team accepts responsibility for making contact with the parent/guardian on receipt of an under 18 applications. Here, accommodation arrangements and expectations are made clear and any questions or concerns addressed.
Regular Check-in Meetings Regular Check-in Meetings (RCIs) are a one- to-one meeting that provide an opportunity for a Student Living Support Officer to build rapport and to get to know you, the resident. RCIs are fundamental in developing respectful, professional, and trusting with relationships. They provide an opportunity for conversations with you about your physical, emotional, and social wellbeing as well as supporting greater engagement with University life and academic success. This is paramount in cultivating resilience in our residential community when faced with adversity in many areas including, but not limited to: É Physical Health É Mental Health É Social Wellbeing É Academic Success É Financial Security É Community connections By employing a human-centered approach, our staff can best support you in having a meaningful and positive experience as the University of Tasmania. It is a requirement of being a member of the Student Living community that you engage in the Regular Check-in process. These can be frequent if you need them – once a month, or more often – or infrequent if you don’t require as much support – every 60-90 days. During or after these meetings your Support Officer will take some notes. These notes are treated confidentially in accordance with our Data and Information Governance Policy . These notes are visible only to the Student Living team and SaFCU.
