Welch Packaging Acquires Northeast Box Company Elkhart, Indiana based Welch Packaging, a family owned and led manufacturer of cus- tom corrugated products for local customers, announced the acquisition of Northeast Box Company (NBC) in Ashtabula, Ohio. This ac- quisition includes NBC’s subsidiary, Paragon Packaging Products in Girard, Pennsylvania, and expands Welch’s geographic footprint in the Mid-Atlantic. Founded in 1978, NBC is a well-known cor- rugated manufacturer in northeast Ohio. The company says it has a long-standing history of providing excellent products and service to customers. Ron Marchewka has led the busi- ness for over 40 years. “Welch Packaging shares many of our core values and we are excited to join a fam- ily-owned business,” he said. “This move will enable us to vertically integrate with Welch’s sheet feeder system, bringing capabilities such as graphic packaging, digital printing, and bulk laminating to our local customers.” Welch Packaging says it is driven by a commitment to customer satisfaction, the associate experience, and safety. NAM: The Opportunity And Challenge Of Manufacturing Data To Transform Business As manufacturers move toward building smarter factories with connected machines, the data those systems produce can offer a host of benefits: improved efficiency, better productivity, informed decision-making, val- ue creation and, ultimately, competitiveness. Yet becoming a data-driven business comes with its share of challenges. In this year’s Manufacturing in 2030 Survey, Data Mastery: A Key to Industrial Competitiveness, the National Association of Manufacturer’s Manufacturing Leadership Coun- cil sheds light on the successes and opportunities for how manufacturers are transforming their operations with data. Security and privacy concerns: As factories become more connect- ed, cybersecurity becomes a greater imperative. For this reason, survey respondents validated that both data security and data privacy are es- sential: • More than 90 percent of respondents have a formal or partial policy on data security and data privacy. • About two-thirds of manufacturers have a formal or partial policy on data quality. • More than 60 percent have a corporate-wide plan, strategy or guide- lines for data management, but only 15 percent follow the plan in its entirety.

How data is used: As manufacturers advance along their M4.0 jour- ney, data is becoming their lifeblood, driving insights and decision-mak- ing. Yet the survey revealed a gap between available data sources and their utilization, a notable area for improvement as the industry looks toward the future. • Spreadsheets are still king: 70 percent of manufacturers enter data to them manually, and 68 percent still use them to analyze data. • 44 percent of manufacturing leaders say the amount of data they col- lect is double what it was two years ago, and they anticipate it will triple by 2030. • While nearly 60 percent of manufacturers use data to understand and optimize projects, there is a shift toward using data to make pre- dictions about operational performance, including machine perfor- mance, in the next decade. Business impact: Most manufacturers leverage data to find ways to save money or promote business growth. However, less than half have a good understanding of the dollar value of their data. • Only about 25 percent of manufacturers have high confidence that the right data is being collected. • Most manufactures have only moderate confidence in their analytic capabilities. • Top challenges include data that comes from different systems or in different formats (53 percent), data that is not easy to access (28 percent) and lack of skills to analyze data effectively (28 percent). • However, despite those challenges, 95 percent of manufacturers say data makes for faster and/or high- er-quality decision-making. The bottom line: An overwhelming majority of manufac- turers (86 percent) believe that the effective use of manu- facturing data will be “essential” to their competitiveness. But to realize data’s potential, manufacturers must fig- ure out how to organize and analyze their data effectively, ensure that their data is trustworthy and align their busi- ness strategy closely with their data strategy. No Lights. No Camera. All Action.
Make a stronger, lighter and more sustainable corrugated blank using less glue by implementing a “brick” style pattern developed by Baumer hhs. This pattern creates a stronger bond using less glue. Our new all-electric PX 1000 applicators with over a billion cycle life can easily apply the pattern with clean cutoff and accurate placement. The PGD 1000 sensor is there to show your customer that every box was properly glued so you’ll never end up on some gag reel. You can be the star with The CorrBox solution from Baumer hhs.
PGD 1000 Monitoring Sensor • Measure the glue proximity to the edge of the tab and avoid squeeze-out so you deliver an accurately glued box every time. • The printing on the carton does not effect the hybrid sensor’s ability to read the bead. Black, white, plaid or polka dot, the sensor is not bothered, so neither are you. • No UV additives needed for detection saves you money, time and effort.
PX 1000 Cold Glue Applicator • Extremely fast and powerful closing force means no drips or tailing so your first box is a good box. • Strong armature activation easily handles viscosity fluctuations and will work with a large variety of adhesives. • Fast action coil means you can now stitch your beads at higher running speeds lowering adhesive consumption up to 70% and improving board output.

business today, and the third generation — Harris’ daugh- ter, Jordan Dawson, a Customer Services Rep, and Cox’s son, Payton Cox, Project Engineer — have also found re- warding careers at the family company. From there, at- tendees toured the new Greif CorrChoice facility which will be supplying large format boxes up to triple wall. Next up was an inspirational visit to the University of Texas-Arlington for lunch and a program with presenta- tions on cyber security (Steve Jarmon, Stambaugh Ness), the regional economy (Mariam Yousuf, an economist from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas), internships (Caitlin Salaverria, President of the International Corrugated Pack- aging Foundation (ICPF), and Ben Dolezal, Associate Pro- fessor of Design, UTA), followed by a tour of UTA’s packag- ing program facilities.
Salaverria said the ICPF is working to increase student awareness of the industry and create resources for those in the corrugated packaging industry through programs, outreach, industry exposure and impactful partnerships. Jenise Cox, CFO of Harris Packaging, moderated the program at UTA during the AICC SW Summit.
DESIGNS THAT INCREASE PRODUCTION
“We want you to be as successful as possible. We want to give you tools to help make that happen,” she said. ICPF has donated equipment to col- leges and universities and helped develop curricula to support packaging faculty and expand course offerings. UTA is a great ex- ample. Salaverria said that ICPF, with sup- port from Harris Packaging, sponsored the upstart of UTA’s packaging design lab and helped develop some of their curricula.
ASDI offers: • 40 years of experience with separators, cyclones, conveyors and more • Sequential, Zero-Defect and various types of Scrap Systems • Each system is guaranteed to meet customer specifications • T urnkey Systems-handling all grades of paper and paperboard • In ground and overhead return conveyor systems direct to balers • Replace your undersized or aging cyclone over a two or three-day weekend • Representing a complete line of shredders, wet scrubbers and filters • NF PA compliant systems, ISN Network
“We do this through our university awards program,” she said. “We allow schools to submit requests for funding ev- ery year.” Educating students at earlier ages about careers in the corrugated packaging industry is also part of ICPF’s mission. “One of our main issues is that students don’t know about us. They don’t know that we offer the opportunity for lifelong ca- reers. We’re currently working to expand this outreach beyond colleges and univer- sities to also target community colleges, trade and vocational schools, high school and middle school students,” she said.

in the corrugated packaging industry which includes job stability, opportunities for advancement, a commitment to sustainability and innovation while showcasing the import- ant role that boxes play in our everyday lives. “The video illustrates the sense of pride that comes from making es- sential products used across the world,” she said.
ICPF has created customized resources at careersin- corrugated.com , including videos, personality assess- ments to explore the types of careers in the packaging industry, and more which employers can use to support
their outreach efforts to connect with students, potential employees, and interns. “Harris Packaging has done a phenomenal job building relationships with the schools that are around them and I think it’s paid off for them,” Salaverria said. One of the videos highlights the benefits of a career Harris Packaging’s recent investment is the Emba 215 Ultima.
But one of the best things box makers can do is offer students a hands-on experience, Salaverria said in urging companies to talk to their universities about internship op- portunities in all areas of the business from management and packaging design to machine operators and mainte- nance technicians.

PRINTCHEK REPRESENTS A NEW FRONTIER IN PRINT QUALITY ASSURANCE FOR THE CORRUGATED CARDBOARD INDUSTRY PrintChek uses a series of line scan cameras to capture an image of each sheet across its entire span before being die-cut. Every sheet's size, rotation, and print quality are then compared to your set “golden standard” to identify defects as small as 2mm like skew, spots, hickeys, smears, color deviation, missing print, and more. Using PrintChek in conjunction with MeasurementChek allows you to remotely monitor production and quality statistics which you can then export via Excel for statistical analysis.

“It seems that once we can get people in the industry, they tend to stay,” she said. “We just need to get them in the door, have them stay for longer than that first 90 days and we’re in good shape.” Dolezal said that there are three purposes of intern- ships at UTA: acquiring new skills, real-world experience, networking, and mentorship. “Our students are really well-equipped to take on a wide range of creative opportunities no matter what you’re looking for,” he said. By their junior year they have taken all the founda- tional course work including 3D design where they are introduced to corrugated material and folding carton as

Dolezal said there are many success stories from stu- dents whose internships have helped prepare them to take on more challenges and gain insights into the work- ings of a business. Dolezal said that internships can be in-person, remote or in a hybrid format. “Our students love to share their innovative ideas and creative skills and practice what they’ve learned in the ac- ademic setting in a professional environment,” he said. Cox said that Harris Packaging has hired several em- ployees from UTA’s business department including Shaban Al-Refai, Packaging Designer at Harris Packaging, and an adjunct professor and former UTA packaging student. “It’s great because he brings that industry perspec- tive,” Dolezal said. “He had a student that liked his class so much they decided to sign up for an independent study

with him so there’s a lot of interest. “The students are passionate about it. They sign up for the class not necessarily knowing what they’re getting into and by the end of the semester, they’re recommending it to their friends because they had such a good time. “They may not have been as comfortable with all the math they had to do because they’re like, ‘I got into art because I didn’t want to do math.’ But they’re here and they do it and we work with them. I’d say about 60 to 70 students per year are getting trained on ArtiosCAD and graphics applied to structure.” To keep the industry going strong, Cox said packaging companies should engage with the department heads at

their universities, an outreach activity that her sister, Jana Harris, has taken on full force with speaking engagements, sponsorships, and helping implement new curricula. “It’s amazing how much these universities want to en- gage with employees in the real world. It’s a connection they’re very anxious and willing to make,” Cox said. The ribbon on UTA’s design lab was cut 10 years ago, a small room that houses a large-formal six-color jet printer and a Kongsberg cutting table. It was a cramped space for 16 students, that’s why Dolezal was so excited when they were able to secure space upstairs for a 3D design classroom, embedded with- in the art department. Half of the classroom is equipped with ArtiosCAD systems and students use the other half to create their designs. “It’s been a big process to get to where we are now in 2024,” Dolezal said. “We’ve got packaging courses that are being taught in here and we also have our 3D foundations course as well as a product design course. I’m proud of the growth that’s happened in the last 10 years.” AICC Chairman Matt Davis, President of Packaging Ex- press, heaped praise on the work they have done. “I’ve heard about this from Jana over the years, but to actually see it, this is super impressive and just keep doing it, it’s great, keep it up,” he said.
