ings, and we find that God later pro vided a fine step-mother for Abraham and Sally Lincoln. Now, Bill, what have you to add?” “ Of course,” Bill began, “ the thing most people remember first of all when they think of Abraham Lincoln is the fact that through him the slaves were set free. Well, this morning we heard of the event in his life that first made him think seriously of the slavery problem. One summer when he was just a boy he was asked to sail with a Mr. Allen Gentry down the Missis sippi River to do some trading in New Orleans. They loaded their flatboat with cornmeal, flour, and other sup plies. I guess it must have been plenty exciting all right! At night they’d tie the boat by a tree and just sleep right there on the river. Anyway, in New Orleans, he saw the slaves sold in market places. Sometimes whole families would be split up because they were sold to different people. This must have made a lasting im pression upon Abraham Lincoln.” “Yes, Bill, and Abraham Lincoln will always be remembered for his untiring work and faithful effort through which slavery was finally abolished. He was truly a great man, one of the greatest our country has ever known,” said Mother. The little group about the fire fell silent. “ Mother.” Susan’s voice broke the silence. “ Yes, dear?” replied Mother. “ Mother, may we make a New Year’s resolution in February?” “Why yes, my dear. Good resolu tions are always in order. What do you wish to resolve?” “ I resolve to be more kind to that little Negro girl in my class this year,” said Susan with solemn face. “ Oh, good for you, Sue! And I re solve to read a chapter of God’s Word each day,” cried Jane. “ Say, I can’t let you two get ahead of me,” said Bill. “ I’m going to re make my resolution to study harder this year. If Abraham Lincoln could get so far by studying, maybe I can too—and, . . . Jane, I guess I’d better join you in that Bible reading.” When the clock chimed the hour, announcing Father’s soon arrival for the evening meal, the group, with heads bowed low, asked the Lord Jesus to help them keep their “ Feb ruary resolutions,” and Mother softly whispered, “ Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Prov. 22 : 6 );
