that we may live the Christian life, we must have the Christian life. When life is present, it will be mani fested in greater or lesser degree. Life always proves its presence and so does eternal life. This new life leads us to worship, praise, and obey the living Lord. This life is attractive to others. In every department of life it is necessary to be fully devoted to that in which we are engaged. The soldier is devoted to his country and its com mands. The husband is devoted to his wife and her desires. The servant is devoted to his master and his master’s instructions. So the Christian in or der to be most useful and fruitful must be devoted to the One who bought him, the Lord Jesus Christ, and to the One who teaches him, the Holy Spirit. This whole-hearted atti tude of consecration brings, supreme joy and great fruitfulness. March 18, 1951 LET THESE SYMBOLS SPEAK! John 19:13-20; 1 Cor. 1:17, 18 The cross is a place of humiliation, shame, suffering and death. The cross of Christ tells the world of the tragic condition of human hearts. Men took the finest of men and gave Him the worst treatment. Men took the great est lover and manifested toward Him the greatest hatred. The cross reveals the utter wickedness of the human heart and the greatest love of God’s heart. The cross is worn around the neck on a gold chain as an ornament. Christ was nailed to it—rejected by men. The Cross Is a Place o f Death Gal. 6:14 The cross of Christ was to the Apostle Paul a mark and proof that he was through with the world and its sinful pleasures, and had taken his place with the rejected Christ. The world was also nailed to the cross as far as Paul was concerned and had no influence nor place in his life and program. The cross stood between Paul and all that the world offered. He sought nothing from the world which was so vile in his sight that it could only be nailed to the cross with Christ. The Saviour on that cross won Paul’s heart and life. It should be the same with us. Let the cross make us a separated, consecrated people. The Cross Is a Place of Rejection Matt. 27:22 Communism rejects both the cross and the Christ who was on it. me, that ye might have life” (John 5 :40). There must be a yielding of the will in full surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ and to the Holy Spirit of God. Then there is daily progress, growth in grace, and consistent Chris tian living. We Have the Word o f God to Teach Us Psa. 43:3 We learn to know God’s will by reading God’s Word. We understand God’s purposes by meditating on God’s written truth. We ascertain God’s de sires by considering the revelations of His will in the printed Scripture. In no way can we become intelligent Christians except by reading His Word and appropriating it in our hearts. A constant consideration of what God has written will enable us to think God's thoughts and conform our lives to God’s plans. The Word of God reveals the will of God. We Have the Holy Spirit to Empower Us Micah 3:8 The beautiful new locomotive, per fect in design and workmanship, will not move except as it may be empow ered by live steam. The dynamo per fectly made will carry no power until it is actuated by a current outside of itself. So it is in the Christian life. It is not enough to lay down a few rules before the Christian’s gaze. There must be a power from Heaven to enable men to live the life of Heaven. This power is in the Person of the Spirit of God. We Have Eternal Life to Enable Us Heb. 7:16 That which is dead has no power to move nor act in any way. That which is dead shows no growth nor activity nor usefulness. God says that men are “ dead in sin,” dead to God. In order
