March 18, 1951 JESUS FACES DEATH Mark 14:22-26, 32-36 Pointers on the Lesson

The death of Christ upon the cross was soon to be consummated. The purpose for which He had come into the world was> about to be realized. (See Matt. 20:28). It was altogether fitting therefore that the Son of God should make all the final preparation necessary for that climactic event. That is the matter to which we give attention in this week’s lesson. The Institution of the Bread and Cup vv. 22-25 Jesus and His disciples were eating a supper together when He gave to His followers the memorials of His coming death. Much discussion has gathered about the question as to precisely what meal this was which they were eating. We know that it was at the Passover season and there were a number of meals consumed during that time. Which one was this ? John says it was “ before the feast of the passover” (13:1). That is, it was before the time when the paschal lamb was eaten. This could not very well have been the paschal supper, else it would have been eaten ahead of the proper time since that would be at the time when Christ would be hanging upon the cross or shortly after. He was the actual fulfillment of every paschal supper (1 Cor. 5 :7 ). The supper eaten therefore was prob ably the first meal of the day of preparation. At such a time Jesus prepared His disciples for the future remembrance of the great thing He was to do for them at Calvary. He gave them the bread and the cup which represented His body and His blood so soon to be offered for man’s redemption. It is a tragedy that such doctrines as tran- substantiation, consubstantiation and the like have arisen to blur men’s vision as to the real purpose behind the giving of these symbols. They were for the purpose of helping men to remember. It is so easy to forget. (See 1 Cor. 11:24, 25). It is beside the point to attribute a mystical meaning to the bread and the cup. The Saviour calls the bread His body in the same sense that He calls Him self a door (John 10:9), a vine (John T H E K I N G ' S B U S I N E S S

A King’s Business gift subscription for your friend may be a form of evangelism. Often Jesus warned the people about loving to be first and to have others always praising them. One day He was watching people give their of fering in the great temple. Rather than praising those who gave large offerings, the Lord Jesus praised a widow who gave only two mites (about one-fourth of one penny!), for they were all that she had. He was again showing His hearers that the love in our hearts is more important than the actions of our hands. Should not those who buy and sell in God’s house today seriously heed His warning about such great sin? How can they expect to lead souls to Him and to receive His approval and blessing when they deliberately dis obey His teachings? If they would trust God to supply their needs, and
