WHAT AUTUMN HAS IN STORE

Early October had me heading to Las Vegas for a couple days of continuing education. Not a bad place for a dental convention, right? I did get to have a little fun at the end of the day, but most of my time at these conventions is dedicated to learning. I got updated on new procedures and technology and learned about different materials we can use for our patients’ benefit. It’s amazing how quickly things can evolve with technology, and it’s great to both feel up to speed on everything and bring that back to the practice. While there is a lot to do in Las Vegas, there’s one activity I find endlessly entertaining: people-watching. No matter how many times I go, I always find it fun to sit and watch the other visitors of this glamorous town. In many ways, Vegas contains two separate worlds: one of people who come to visit Las Vegas and another of people who live there. People who live there hardly ever visit the Strip or go to a show. They tend to stay out of the part of the city that brings everyone in. Well, I hope your October is off to a great start. I’m looking forward to some cooler weather and Halloween fun later this month. We’re not quite sure about our costumes yet, but we still have some time to figure that out. Until then, I’m going to enjoy the season and everything that autumn entails. –Dr. Elkins

It’s hard to believe it’s already October, isn’t it? August and September seemed to fly by.The kids started school and are pretty much back in the groove of their routines again. It always takes a little time for them — and for us — to adjust, but I think we’re there now. Last month, we spent Labor Day weekend on Lake Cascade enjoying the lingering days of summer with family and friends. Some friends of ours have a cabin up there, so we brought the Jet Skis and had a great time on the lake. Evie’s been back at school, and Julianna was working her summer job, so the younger kids came along for the fun. September also brought celebrations for our two birthdays of the month. First up was Beth and then Adam, our youngest. For Beth’s birthday, we went to McCall with our family and had a great weekend there, taking the Jet Skis out again and making sure we got at least one more good day on the water before the weather gets cooler. Adam turned 5 this year, but people almost always mistake him for being older. Like Russell, Adam is tall for his age. He’s in preschool this year and will be starting kindergarten next year. It’s pretty wild to have our youngest almost at that milestone. I was always a tall skinny kid, just like Russell and Adam. Still, I think they’re both going to surpass me. Russell’s already taller than me — he passed me up this year — and I have no doubt he’ll keep growing. With the genes from Beth’s family and mine, our kids are all destined to be pretty tall.

SCARY MOVIES

For the Whole Family! With the spookiest day of the year fast approaching, there’s nothing like a scary movie night alike. If you’re looking for a lighthearted movie night that still captures a Halloween feel, “Ghostbusters” is a great choice. NO. 2: ‘CORALINE’ Few authors weave creepiness with coming-of-age stories

to get the whole family into the Halloween spirit. The only problem is most frightful films really aren’t for kids, and the ones that are often fall flat. But, if you’re looking for a flick that will have the whole family on the edge of their seats (without traumatizing anyone), consider our top three picks for scary, family-friendly movies. NO. 3: ‘GHOSTBUSTERS’ “Who you gonna call” to be high on this list? The 1984 spectral classic, “Ghostbusters.”

together better than Neil Gaiman, and his 2009 film “Coraline” proves just that. Based on Gaiman’s book of the same name, director Henry Selick uses his signature stop-motion animation style to bring the script to life. While young children may find the doll-like imagery too unsettling, this is a great introductory thriller for preteens. NO. 1: ‘SCOOBY-DOOON ZOMBIE ISLAND’ Yes, a Scooby-Doo movie is at the top of this list — and it deserves to be. As the feature-length debut of Scooby, Shaggy, and the rest of the Mystery Gang, this 1998 film doesn’t pull any punches. While the hand-drawn animation and slapstick high jinks of the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon are all there, make no mistake: There are some creepy moments in this movie. Between scary zombie elements and a spooky Voodoo doll scene, this is the perfect film to get your kids into the Halloween spirit.

While this may be more of an action-

comedy, plenty of scares and creepy imagery still get a jump out of first-time watchers young and old

Kalie and Caryn Do You Vape? Here’s What You Should Know

-Kalie and Caryn With yummy flavors, e-cigarettes may feel less risky than regular cigarettes, but don’t let that fool you. Take care of your teeth and your overall health and consider cutting back on — or cutting out — your tobacco use in any form. –Kalie Caryn cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth. In one study, teeth exposed to vaping aerosols had four times as much bacteria as teeth that weren’t exposed to it. If you vape, make sure you’re coming in for your regular reservations every six months. and Medicine, the nicotine intake from smoking e-cigarettes is comparable to the amount from smoking traditional cigarettes. Some recent stories might also make you think twice about the claim that e-cigarettes are better for you. Take, for example, the patient who was cavity-free for 35 years. He switched from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes, and, within a year, the enamel on his teeth had noticeably eroded, putting him at risk for cavities. Glycerin, one of the chemical sweeteners found in many e-liquids used for vaping, has been linked to enamel erosion and can explain the change. Like nicotine, propylene glycol, another ingredient in most e-liquids, can also cause dry mouth. Dry mouth increases the likelihood of oral decay and puts you at an increased risk for cavities. Vaping may also increase the levels of

Hello! Today we want to touch on a habit that’s become increasingly popular in the last couple of years: smoking electronic cigarettes, or vaping. THE CURSE OF THE HAUNTED TOOTHBRUSH

In a town called Emmett, there lived a boy named Ben. Ben hated brushing his teeth. He avoided it at all costs, even fooling his parents into thinking he’d brushed. One night, as Ben was about to fall asleep, he heard a small voice. “Ben. Ben,” it said. Ben was confused. His brother was away at camp, and it didn’t sound like his parents. Ben pulled his covers over his head, yet the voice continued. “Ben. Be-en.” Finally, Ben couldn’t stand it. He got up and tiptoed into the hall. “Ben. Ben.” The voice was coming from the bathroom! Ben crept in.There, on the counter, was his toothbrush, and, somehow, it was speaking! “Ben, you haven’t been using me. You know what happens to the teeth of little boys who don’t brush them? They all fall out!”

But it’s not all scares in Sleepy

In 1790, a school teacher named Ichabod Crane was riding home alone from a harvest festival in the village of Sleepy Hollow when he encountered a mysterious rider on horseback. Crane, horrified by the horseman’s missing head, turned and ran in the opposite direction. The Headless Horseman gave chase, hurling his own decapitated head at the terrified teacher. Ichabod Crane was never heard from again ... or so goes “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving. This story, first published in 1820, has become a Halloween favorite. The legend is so beloved that in 1997, the village of North Tarrytown, New York, where many events of the story take place, officially changed its name to Sleepy Hollow. Today, the town becomes one big Halloween party during the month of October. Sleepy Hollow is home to many historic landmarks, including the Headless Horseman Bridge and the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving himself was laid to rest. Evening lantern tours of the cemetery are a popular attraction, and Irving isn’t the only spooky celebrity buried there. Fans of the Gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows” will be delighted to enter the crypt of famed vampire Barnabas Collins. Another highly anticipated stop for many guests is Sleepy Hollow’s premier annual attraction, Horseman’s Hollow, an experience not for the
