HOW TO PRESENT TO... MODERATORS

The key to presenting to moderator is to be organised, well-prepared, relaxed and professional in your approach.

• When preparing for your presentation, ask them for advice on how they’d like the presentation to go and what to include – they’ll appreciate your being well prepared and organised.

Pre-circulate relevant information to them before the presentation, letting them know what the objective of your presentation is.

• They like time to prepare their thoughts and consult with others.

When opening your presentation, clearly re-state the objective of the presentation and describe how you plan to achieve it.

• Share the agenda of your presentation, but indicate that you are happy to flex • the agenda to ensure the best outcome is achieved. • Ask for any questions or comments they might have from the pre-circulated material.

Keep your presentation as succinct as possible and focus only on the key elements.

• Your pre-reading will have provided enough detail for them, so just provide an executive summary of what it suggests

If using slides, use a combination of pictures, models, graphs, flow charts and data tables as appropriate.

• Minimise the amount of words on slides. • Maximum of three bullet points per slide.

Pause occasionally to check on engagement and understanding and accept any questions that might come up.

• Keep the tone of the presentation calm, organised and steady.

Balance story-telling with data and facts and ensure you balance the logical and emotional elements of your presentation.
