W ILKINSON G ELBVIEH R ANCH Wilkinson Gelbvieh Ranch is located in the arid prairie of SE Colorado, between Trinidad and LaJunta. Bill and Nancy own around 250 Gelbvieh and Balancer cows, about 2/3 of which are registered. Their daughter, Sydney, has recently returned to the ranch, working for CSU as Extension Specialist for 4-H and Agriculture for Las Animas County. Together, the three of them make up Wilkinson Gelbvieh Ranch. AGA # 7007
The land has been in Bill’s family since the early 1950s, when his parents, Charles and Jo Wilkinson, moved their sheep and Hereford cows from the family’s ranch in the Hill Country of Texas. Charles laid the foundation for the Colorado ranch, with his forward- thinking conservation and infrastructure practices - all of which have greatly benefited the Wilkinson’s in their operation. Growing up with Herefords, Bill made some big changes in the ranch’s genetics. After obtaining an Animal Science degree from CSU, then managing a registered Limousin herd in the San Luis Valley of Colorado, Bill moved to West Texas in the early-1980s to manage a ranch there, bringing his Herdbuilder Gold Strike son, a PB Gelbvieh cow and a yearling heifer. He had based his decision to move to the Gelbvieh breed on the landmark 1980’s MARC study, which showed the breed’s superiority in both performance and maternal characteristics. During his time in Crane, Bill met and married Nancy, added Sydney to their family and returned to Colorado in 1990, with 2 PB bulls, 10 PB cows, 15 half-blood females and 65 head of crossbred cows.
Back in Colorado, they went to work to develop their Gelbvieh herd, through select purchases and use of AI and ET. They used Angus sires as the logical choice for breeding heifers and, after seeing the acceptance and marketability of the Gelbvieh-Angus cattle, they began to incorporate Angus genetics into their mature Gelbvieh cowherd. So, when the Balancer program was implemented, the Wilkinson’s easily took advantage of the new opportunity. The environment of SE Colorado can be difficult, but the Gelbvieh cow excels. Forage is almost always in short supply and can be pretty spread out, so the Wilkinson’s emphasize the traits that produce good-structured cattle that thrive in these conditions, while still producing the pounds that everyone needs to stay in business. To best adapt to the environment, the Wilkinson’s also maintain a Gelbvieh- based commercial herd. That allows them to better utilize some of the large 10,000+ acre pastures, with larger groups of cattle and multiple bulls. Also, having commercial cattle gives them the option to reduce their herd more quickly, if needed, and still realize the value of those cows.
From the beginning, the Wilkinson’s have been actively involved in the leadership and development of the Breed, through Association membership and cattle exhibition at local, state, and national levels. “The history of the Gelbvieh breed is a tribute to so many people and we are proud to have been a part of that history since 1986. The road has been a little hard to navigate at times and has had its ups and downs, but we are proud to have been on this path. We are excited to stay the course and see what the next 50 years will bring for the Wilkinson family and the Gelbvieh breed.”

The Bulls As you look through the catalog, we hope that you appreciate what you see and get an idea of how we are focused on meeting each of your individual needs. The goal for ourselves and our customers is to have a good breed-up each spring, producing calves that come easily and thrive and grow. Whether you need a bull for your heifers, a bull to increase your weaning weights or a bull that will give you calves that grade well on the rail, we feel that these bulls can meet all of your needs. These bulls have been developed on a high roughage ration here at home in a 2 acre trap, where they have lots of room to walk around. The bulls get familiar with us and vice versa, so we think that’s a plus, too. All bulls are PI-BVD free and have been ultra-sounded, PAP tested and passed a breeding soundness exam. If Trich tests are required, we can keep the bull(s) and get them tested, then get them to the buyer later. Or, the buyer can take the bulls, have them tested at home and send us the bill. Supplement sheets with Ultrasound data, PAP scores, scrotal measurements and any other updates will be available the week prior to the Kick-Off Saturday, on our website, on Facebook and by request. Bulls will be eligible to go anywhere in the United States. If you cannot take them right away, we can keep them here, at a minimal charge. If you want to take them on Sale Day, health and brand papers will be ready to go. If you need them delivered, we will work with each of you to get the bulls to your place, charging for delivery after the first 100 miles. Since the bulls are here at home, feel free to give us a call anytime and we will be happy to have you walk through the bulls at your convenience. Then, return for Sale Day or call or bid on-line, through DVAuction. That will make it easier to fit into your schedules.
Meeting our Breeding Goals When we drive through our cows, we know that our we are meeting our goals and as you can see from a few of these graphs, our genetics are falling in line, as well. These are just three of the many areas that our cattle are excelling in as compared to the national averages. ***For more information, check out the inside back cover for EPD and Index explanations.

The Heart of the Herd – The Females If you have gone through and read the footnotes, you will notice that nearly every bull’s dam gets some mention. That’s because we truly love and value our females! Over the years, we have spent a lot of time, energy, and money, selecting the females that will continue to improve our herd. Always keeping our environment and end goals in mind, we have focused on breeding for moderate sized, efficient, and structurally sound cows. All the while, we have focused on improving their performance and carcass values, which they will pass on to their calves. To do all of this, we have been very strategic with our bull selection and mating, while at the same time gathering and reporting all data. One example is ultra-sounding our yearling heifers, along with the bull calves, which we have been doing for over 20 years. Just like our Registered herd, our Commercial females undergo the same scrutiny. Our cows are expected to cover the country and breed back each year in a timely manner. They have got to be good, moderate-sized mamas with udders and teats that hold up over time, and they must raise calves that will generate money for us. As a result of our efforts, the quality of our heifer calves continues to improve. Each Fall after weaning, our normal routine is to evaluate and sort our heifer calves into 3 basic groups – Keepers, Sale replacement heifers and market calves. Twenty years ago, this was a “bottom heavy” split, with us usually only keeping the top 20-25 head and selling the rest at the Sale barn, for replacements or feeders. However, times have changed and so has our herd. We are getting “top-heavy” with more and more quality heifers. So, each year we offer our customers a chance to choose from several pens of heifers as part of our Bull Sale. This year, we will continue to have 2 pens of 5 heifers, but we are adding something a little different - offering the pick of our three NWSS Balancer Pen of Heifers. If you need more replacement females, let us know. We will still have 25-30 to choose from.
Dams of Dominance Wilkinson Gelbvieh is #1 in Colorado - AGAIN
Each year the AGA recognizes the top-performing Gelbvieh and Balancer females and their breeders/owners through the Dam of Merit and the Dam of Distinction Program. Both programs recognize the cows that excel at what Gelbvieh and Balancer cows are known for – fertility, production and stayability. The Dam of Merit program is an elite group, with only 5.32% of the cows qualifying, but the Dam of Distinction is even more special – only 1% of active cows are able to meet this criteria, as it involves EIGHT years of production records. For 2025, Wilkinson Gelbvieh was the #1 Owner of Dams of Dominance in Colorado, with 36 total – 32 Dams of Merit and 4 Dams of Distinction, and they were 11th in the Nation for BOTH owners and breeders. Considering the arid and brittle environment of SE Colorado, that is a true testament to the Gelbvieh cow.

From his birth, this bull has been special. He was the lead bull in our NWSS pen of bulls. It was extremely humbling and gratifying to hear so many positive comments from fellow breeders as well as the pen judge. He is a big made, smooth middled half-brother on his bottom side to the high-selling Miller bull last year. His dam has the ability to write history in the Gelbvieh breed. A Dam of Merit, who has proven herself time and time again. Scanned with a 17+ rib-eye; FPI of 110% and TPI of 4%. This bull is special – hard to describe the combination of rugged and smooth, but that’s what he is.
