Thank you for your interest in LBW Community College's Honors Program! Please peruse the following Q&A before taking the next step.
Who is the right candidate for this program? A motivated, high-performing student pursuing an Associate in Arts or Associate in Science Degree on the Andalusia Campus.
Am I academically eligible? Incoming freshmen must have a minimum 90 average, and applicants must have an ACT composite score of 22 or higher; ACT superscores are accepted.
Besides applying and being academically eligible, what else is required? To be considered, applicants must submit, along with the LBW Traditional Student Scholarship Application, their ACT score verification, current high school transcript, and two letters of recommendation (written by teachers, counselors, principals, community leaders, or employers). What happens if I am selected? The Honors Program Committee will invite selected students to schedule a visit to the Andalusia Campus to write a sample essay and take part in a small group interview. This is an enjoyable process during which the Committee can learn more about each candi date’s background, interests, and communication styles. If selected for the program, what does my freshman year as an honors student look like? Incoming honors students are asked to attend a summer orientation session to get more details about the program and enjoy priority registration for fall classes; typically, this is held the first Friday morning in June (for honors students, this orientation takes the place of The LBW Experience). Our freshmen take several classes together as a cohort during the fall and spring semesters. This includes HUM299A and B, which are taught by the Honors Program Chair and devoted to exploring the Capstone Project. Our students also take cohort-style, honors-level versions of SPH106, PSY200, THR120, and HUM101.
What if I have already taken any of these classes as a dual-enrollment student? We do have a solution for that: Honors-By-Contract courses. We will discuss this if the situation arises.
What is a Capstone Project? In short, the most exciting part of your life as an honors student! While academically rigorous, this is an enlightening three-semester individual project that our Honors graduates will have completed with guidance from the Honors Program Chair and selected advisors. Capstone Project topics can be related to each student’s field of study or an area of particular interest, must be research -based, and must seek to benefit others. Our honors graduates credit this project with their enhanced academic, professional, and personal skills that have opened doors to amazing scholarship and career opportunities. Since this program will require extra work on my part, what does the scholarship provide? This two-semester scholarship covers tuition and fees up to $4,500 ($2,250 fall semester and $2,250 spring semester). If renewed for the second year, that is a total of $9,000, which is more than any other LBW Institutional Traditional Student Scholarship! While that financial benefit is valuable on its own, the Honors Program’s long -term benefits include preparing students for bachelor’s level coursework and introduci ng them to a group of education professionals who can be lifelong members of their support network. Even more, honors-level coursework and successful completion of a Capstone Project are stellar additions to applications and résumés. Could I earn the scholarship for a second year? Yes! This scholarship is renewable for a second year for students who complete 26 credit hours, including pre-selected honors courses, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.250. However, students whose GPA falls below a 3.0 at any point will be released from the program and their scholarship terminated. Also, honors students are required to earn a B or above in all honors coursework and a C or above in all non-honors coursework for scholarship renewal.
