Newark, New Jersey – Doing what you’re passionate about, branding yourself as a problem-solver, surrounding yourself with smart people and reinforcing your credibility. Those are just some of the in- gredients that lead to success for women in the business world, according to two women executives of Prudential. The program at CREW NJ’s September meeting at The Newark Club provided the forum for the discussion. The event also provided CREW NJ the opportunity to welcome new members. “As our chapter continues to grow, we welcome these new members to our ranks,” said Patricia Riedel of CBRE, chapter president and CREW Network delegate. “Benefits of membership include the high- est quality programming, outstanding networking, and access to industry news and marketing tools, including exciting resources on our new website. We remain committed to the advancement of women in the commercial real estate industry.” “That topic—the advancement of women in business—is the focus of our discussion this evening,” said Collete English Dixon, principal of Prudential Real Estate Investors, who introduced two of her Prudential colleagues to attendees. “Manage up” said Paige Warren, Managing Director of Prudential Mortgage Capital Co. and President and CEO of Prudential Huntoon Paige, one of the nation’s leading originators of FHA multifamily and healthcare loans. She outlined an impressive career that included high level corporate positions at AREA, Inc., Security Capital Group and Robert Charles Lesser & Company as well as serving as the Deputy Director of the Department of Housing and Urban Development prior to joining Prudential. “Make sure you have the right people in the right seats,” said Warren. “Find your ‘drivers’ and nurture their talents. Understand that the higher up you go, the more your success is about your team than you. And along the way, don’t be afraid to confront conflict head-on when needed.” Monthly Meeting Spotlights Prudential Execs, welcomes New Members “Do what you love, find things that give you energy, build your career from the ground up, establish your brand and live it daily, and surround yourself with people that are even better than you,” Warren concluded. CREWNJ remains committed to philanthropy and the beneficiary of the month’s meeting, for the second year in a row, was YouthBuild Newark, part of a national network that provides low-income youth with the opportunity to complete secondary school. CREW-NJ donated fifty percent of the proceeds from the event to the group. “YouthBuild is an international program serving young people from 16 to 24 with career development,” said SanDonna Jones, deputy executive director of YouthBuild Newark, Inc. “Our effort includes build- ing affordable housing and giving students access to UMDNJ, Rutgers and other institutions of higher learning. “We completed programs in Atlantic City, Elizabeth and Jersey City modeled after our flagship program in Newark where in year two we are proud to report that our high school had an 89% graduation rate. We sincerely appreciate CREW NJ’s ongoing support of our efforts.” CREW NJ is the New Jersey Chapter of CREW Network (Commercial Real Estate Network), which is dedicated to the advancement of women in commercial real estate. Membership organizations are comprised of over 8,000 members representing every discipline within the industry and are located in 74 chapters across North America. Your opinions and actions are often perceived by others as a model or standard. Be mindful of that as you conduct yourself throughout your career,” she said. “Build a reputation as a problem-solver and think of your career as a ‘toolbox’,” said Marni Garfinkle, Vice President of Human Resources for Prudential Financial. “You must have and exhibit confidence in yourself.” In discussing advancement after you have established credibility through diligent work and good results, she acknowledged “It helps to have a manager that will go to bat for you.” “Seek out from your superiors what their expectations are, when and how they want to be updated and how frequently.” In summary, “define your own success, make smart decisions, drive to succeed, attack problems not people –and don’t take yourself too seriously,” said Garfinkle.
