The simple and practical boric acid detection method is required in many fields, such as seawater desalination facilities and semiconductor manufacturing process. However, currently used boric acid detection methods, such as the absorbance spectroscopic method using colorimetric reagents, require complicated processes and the reagents are not sufficiently stable. On the other hand, ICP analysis can detect boric acid rapidly and with high sensitivity but requires special and expensive equipment. Therefore, we started on the development of new boric-acid detection reagents that enable in situ analysis. We proposed a spectroscopic boric acid detection method using gallacetophenone ( -trihydroxyacetophenone) 1 and an electrochemical boric acid detection method using ( -diketonato)ruthenium complex. 2 On the other hand, we have been developed supramolecular chemical analysis reagents based on cyclodextrin inclusion

complex. 3,4 In this study, a supramolecular complex of a ferrocene included in a cyclodextrin chemically modified with 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid was used for electrochemical detection and we succeeded in the detection of boric acid in water easily, rapidly and highly sensitively ( Scheme 1 ). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first supramolecular system for boric-acid detection using cyclodextrin and electrochemistry, and the result of this research is expected to be applied in the future.
