NOTES on Christian Endeavor

(while apparently friendly yet often show ing a treacherous spirit) said to Mr. Paton, “Who were all those men you had around your house the night we came?” Mr. Paton told him there was no one there except him self and his wife. "Yes, there was,” the native replied. “W e came intending to burn the mission and kill you and your wife, but we saw men with drawn swords standing all around the building, and we dared not attack you .”—The Dawn. II. M ade S trong God has three ways of helping us: First, He says, “I will strengthen thee”; that is, I will make you a little stronger yourself. And secondly, “I will help thee"; that is, I will add My strength to your strength, but you shall lead and I will help you. But thirdly, when you are ready, “I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteous ness”; that is, I will lift you up bodily and carry you altogether, and it will neither be your strength or My help, but My com plete upholding. Hence it must be quite true, that when we come to the end of our strength, we come to the beginning of His, and that in Him the weakest are the strong est, and the most helpless the most helped. — A . B. S im pso n . Through the dark night of the centuries comes the triumphant cry, "Now is Christ risen from the dead." This One who par took of flesh and blood, this One who be came one of us for this very hour, has tasted death for every man, “that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and de liver them, who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage” (Heb. 2:14, 15). Oh, glorious victory! As D. L. Moody has said, “Jesus died alone: but three thousand at Pentecost were the har vest of His death.” Jesus Christ did not die a martyr’s death; willingly, voluntarily, He gave His life as “the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” This greatest victory of all time has been beautifully stated in the words of S. D. Gordon: "The hill of the cross is the highest hill on earth in its sig nificance. There hate’s worst and love’s best met, and love won. Jesus was vic torious as He yielded to the pain and shame of the cross. He did it freely of His own accord. He did it out of love,. He did it for us. So, and only so, are we safe and saved. May the love of it grip us anew today!" APRIL 9, 1939 TH E G R EA T E S T V IC T O R Y O F ALL T IM E 1 C orin th ian s 15:1-20 Meditation on the Lesson

"When I am weak, then' am I strong,” said the Apostle Paul. This is the secret of real power, real strength in the Chris tian life—to realize our own insufficiency, inability, and infirmity, to throw ourselves upon Him, whose strength is “made perfect in weakness.” It was only as we came to Him recognizing our own poverty and sin and unworthiness that we were taken into His family. Now as sons we must continue to realize our dependence upon Him if we would be strong. “Out of weakness were made strong,” should be our testimony. It has been said, and rightly so, that no one can “go forward” in the strength of God, until he has first acknowledged his own helplessness. In the days when Sen nacherib invaded Judah and tried to terrify the inhabitants of Jerusalem, Hezekiah, the king, spoke words of comfort to God’s people: “Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of As syria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the Lord our God to help us, and to fight our battles” (2 Chron. 32:7, 8 ). What was the result? W e read that “the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah.” They were made strong by their confidence in the Lord, and they were not disappointed. For in spite of all the insolent and arrogant boasting of Senna cherib’s army, the remnant of that force went home in defeat, leaving God’s people unharmed and untouched. Today God is still showing Himself strong in behalf of those who trust Him. The weakest, frailest, most impotent among us can become mighty, through God, to the pulling down of strongholds. We can be made strong to endure, even as did Paul, the “weariness and painfulness," the "watchings often," the “hunger and thirst," the “cold and nakedness.” In fact, God uses these very things to temper the steel, to increase the strength. It is the old story of the tree on the wind-swept peak, the story written in nature of strength born out of hardship. J. G. Paton of the New Hebrides and his wife were alone one night in the mis sion when they heard the natives howling around the house, and they gave them selves to continued prayer to God for de liverance from danger, claiming the prom ises in Psalm 91. At last, tired out, they dropped to sleep toward morning, feeling assured that the Lord had heard their cry. Shortly afterward the chief of the natives Helps for the Leader I. “O u t o f W e a k n ess ”
