FAREWELL

Leiba Sablon has been an integral member of the Junior School staff for the past six years in her role as a Year 4 Form tutor. As a highly committed teacher, Leiba has had a huge impact on the school and the boys in her care. She is never one to shy away from the limelight and we will all remember her for her sense of fun, laughter and contributions to the staff band No Direction. Her somewhat wacky, albeit memorable, Form assemblies will also leave an indelible mark on the Junior School! Leiba leaves London with her family to move to Buckinghamshire and to be with her parents; she will be taking up a position at The Grove Prep School shortly. The staff and boys will miss her hugely but we wish her all the very best with her future endeavours.

Alex Matthews arrived in the Junior School in September 2013 from Summerlea Primary near Chichester. His knowledge of excellent practice, highly organised planning and gentle but professional demeanour was apparent to boys, staff and parents from a very early stage. Over his four years at the College, Alex has always been able to take on more responsibilities. In 2015 he was appointed Deputy Head Co-Curricular where he has transformed our clubs and afterschool care programme, as well as taking the ski trip for the last two years to Alpe d’Huez and Risoul. He has had a real impact on all the boys he has taught and the common room as a whole. Alex’s talents for management and leadership have been recognised by St. Paul’s Juniors and he leaves us to become their Deputy Head Pastoral. We wish him every success.

Martin Davis has been with us for two years as a Form tutor in both Year 4 and Year 5. Since arriving from Newton Prep, he has worked extremely hard with the boys in his Form. However it was his passion for rugby that was particularly clear for all to see from an early stage. Martin successfully coached U9 and U10 sides and was able to impart his knowledge of the game onto the boys. He also played an important role in teaching Year 6 maths and helping boys prepare for their 11+ maths exam. What often went unnoticed was that Martin also helped considerably with the Junior School chess competitions, which occasionally involved a trip to Pontins near Camber Sands to support the Junior School team in their competitions. We wish him well in the future.

Sam Neate joined the Junior School in September 2015 as a Year 3 Form tutor and immediately embraced everything about the Junior School. First and foremost, she was an outstanding teacher and constantly sought ways to make both learning and teaching memorable. Whether it was making Stonehenge out of rubbers, planning the ‘Big Sneeze’ for the Junior Symposium or using her ICT skills to liven up a maths lesson, Sam always ensured her lessons were fun and engaging. Despite her short time with us, Sam played a very active role in the Junior School clubs programme. She supported the boys to produce a school newspaper, ran a cartoon-strip club, engaged the Year 3 boys in a lively debating club and held tennis sessions for Year 6 boys. Sam is leaving us to follow her husband in his new job with the BBC in Washington DC and we look forward to hearing about the exciting adventures that they both get up to with their little boy Freddie.

Hayley Cohen joined the College in September 2016 as maternity cover for Sam Neate. 3N’s studious approach and good behaviour around the school over the last two terms is testament to the respect they have for Hayley, and the congenial atmosphere she creates in the classroom - often with background music and even cakes on occasion - has been much appreciated by all in her Form. Hayley has run a popular ‘Horrible Histories’ after school club and, being a singer herself, very much enjoyed working on the Year 3 musical production in the Summer term. Hayley’s baking skills have also found their way into the staffroom and colleagues have been spoilt with an array of home-baked treats over the course of the year. We are told that Hayley has no immediate future plans…but it could involve Scotland or possibly Australia.

Chris Smith joined Dulwich College from Rokeby School in September 2016. He made an instant impact with his outstanding ability to coach football and the boys responded brilliantly to his teaching methods. He impressed so much that he was promoted to coaching the 1 st XI football team in the Lent term. His effect on the Sixth Form boys was equally impressive and the season was a tremendous success as the boys finished the season by lifting the ISFA London Independent Schools’ Cup after defeating Brentwood School in the final. However, it was not just on the football field that Chris’s talents were felt. His contribution to all Junior School sports and physical education has been fantastic and he will be missed by the boys and staff alike. We all wish Chris the very best as he continues his teaching career at Wetherby Preparatory School.
