My Favorite President As a Principled Preservationist, Teddy Roosevelt Stands Out
As we go through another presidential campaign, my mind goes to my favorite president — Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt. He was a larger-than-life figure in our history who accomplished much with his “talk quietly and carry a big stick” mentality. Throughout his life, Teddy lived one adventure after another. He hunted big game on the American frontier and served as a sheriff. He resigned as assistant secretary of the Navy to command the Rough Riders, leading a famous cavalry charge up San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War. He was elected governor of New York and became the youngest president at age 42 after William McKinley was assassinated. But the most significant part for me about this fiery orator was his work in protecting the beauty of our nation. I appreciate his love of nature, the outdoors, and the preservation of our natural wildlife and forests in the U.S. He has been called the conservation president for his extensive work in that area. Teddy served as president from 1901 to 1909. During that time, he signed legislation that created five new national parks, including Mesa Verde, Colorado; Sullys Hill, North Dakota; Platt, Oklahoma; Wind Cave, South Dakota; and Crater Lake, Oregon. He was also involved with the passage of the Antiquities Act in 1906, which continues to empower presidents to designate historic landmarks and other structures or objects as national monuments. He used that act to establish Devils Tower, Wyoming; El Morro, New Mexico; Montezuma Castle, Arizona; Petrified Forest, Arizona; and a big part of the Grand Canyon in Arizona.
One of the reasons his protection of our resources means so much to me is the importance of the natural treasures here in Southern Louisiana. A primary example is our marshes, which house the incredible range of fish we have including speckled trout, tuna, amberjack, and many more. Growing up, I spent many memorable times outdoors with my family. The wetlands of Louisiana are a national treasure. We’ve been in a trench fight with the federal government for 20 years to preserve it for future generations. Teddy was also someone who couldn’t be put in a box. He wasn’t a conformist. He stood up for what he believed in and challenged conventional norms. One great example was when he resigned from the Republican Party to start the Bull Moose Party. Looking at the political landscape today, it’s fun to think about his chances if he were running for president in 2024. Could he be elected today? I think he’d have a good chance. He had a timeless stance of speaking his mind and being progressive, and he put his principles into action. He was a man of principle, no matter who he was talking with or what situation he was faced with. With his fiery determination, I don’t think any environment would deter him from being himself and finding success. While we can’t have Teddy in our pool of presidential hopefuls this time around, I hope that from time to time, those who vie for our highest office consider the bold, positive example he set as they do their part for our nation’s future. From ancient times, human ingenuity has been pivotal in unraveling medical mysteries, and pregnancy testing is a particularly fascinating example. In Egypt, around 1350 BCE, pregnancy testing blended mysticism and early science. Women would urinate on wheat and barley seeds, an intriguing method that modern research has shown to be surprisingly accurate, with a 70% success rate. If barley grew, it indicated a male child; wheat signified a female. Across different cultures, unique approaches emerged. The Greeks, influenced by Hippocrates, developed diagnostic theories based on the four bodily humors. In India, ancient Ayurvedic texts detailed pulse examination techniques for various conditions, including pregnancy, showcasing remarkable observational abilities and a deep understanding of the human body. The Middle Ages saw a curious amalgamation of superstition and the beginnings of scientific inquiry. “Piss prophets” examined urine for its color and clarity, practices that were precursors to today’s urinalysis. A significant advancement came in the 20th century with the discovery of the hormone hCG. This breakthrough led to the first reliable home pregnancy tests in the 1960s, marking a dramatic shift from rudimentary ancient methods and offering greater accuracy and privacy. This journey from ancient seed tests to sophisticated modern diagnostics illustrates the evolution in our understanding of the human body. Those early tests laid the groundwork for the reliable techniques we use today, inspiring us to continue improving our medical knowledge and practices.
