RTC’s 2022 Hall of Fame Rail-Trail: Maine’s Eastern Trail

BY LAURA STARK

This summer, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy announced that Maine’s Eastern Trail would join the national Rail-Trail Hall of Fame ( railstotrails.org/halloffame ), comprising an exemplary group of rail-trails celebrated for the social, economic and quality-of-life value they bring to the communities they serve. The 2022 winner—the first Hall of Fame inductee from Maine—was selected by public vote from among three worthy nominees. Here are just some of the ways the Eastern Trail ( easterntrail.org ) exemplifies the qualities of a Hall of Fame rail-trail.

SCENIC ASSETS

Routes through New England don’t come much prettier than the Eastern Trail, which traverses Maine’s spectacular southern coastline and dense forests. Heading southward on the rail-trail from South Portland’s historical lighthouse (dubbed the “Bug Light” for its diminutive size), you’ll pass through the 3,200-acre birding heaven of Scarborough Marsh as well as a rocky ravine near Arundel where a railroad route was once blasted through more than a century ago.
