HOW LIE ANGLE A FFECTS A GOLF SHOT BY JIMMY KOWALSKI Jimmy Kowalski, PGA, explains why the lie angle of a golf club is important. If it is too upright the face will point left at impact. If it is too flat the face will point right at impact. Click on the image to the right to view the video and see a demonstration of how our resident PGA club master adjusts the lie angle using his trusty Maltby Machine. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SENIOR STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONS! Congratulations to the 2020 ANCC Senior Stroke Play Champions Shelley Savage and Tripp Baird. One of the most difficult shots in golf is the shot out of a fairway bunker with a lip that is well above the level of the golf ball. A lot of times we may find ourselves chunking the golf ball or catching the golf ball thin, leaving it in the bunker. Never fear! Here are some quick tips to help you get consistent ball contact to get the ball safely out of the bunker and back into play: (1) The most important part about this shot is to keep it simple. Do not try to change your swing to manufacture a high shot to get the ball over a lip. (2) When choosing a club to hit I always recommend taking a club with enough loft to ensure that you will get the ball up high enough to carry the lip of the bunker. (3) Like greenside bunker shots it is very important to dig your feet in slightly and almost feel like you are flat footed. Digging your feet down into the sand slightly lowers your body level so you should choke up on the club slightly to compensate. (4) Next, I typically will open the clubface adding more loft to help ensure I can get the ball out of the bunker. (5) Keep your legs fairly quiet and avoid moving your upper body up and down. (6) Focus on the top of the ball to assist in picking it clean off the sand and take your normal swing. (7) Watch the ball carry over the lip and back into play so you can save par, and possibly even give yourself a look at birdie. If you use these quick little tips, I can guarantee more success from fairway bunkers and having more fun from one of the toughest shots in golf. Click on the image to the left to see this in action!
