Scripture:

Isaiah 43:19

O ne thing I love about the new year is the opportunity to get a fresh start. Isaiah 43:19 says: “For I am about to do something new. See I have already begun do you not see it, I will make a pathway in the wilderness. I will create rivers in the dry wasteland.” How many of us said all throughout last year that we were going to complete a project on our car we knew needed to happen, but we kept pushing it off week- after-week, month-after-month? We know it would run better. We know it would look better. We know we would even enjoy it better, but getting it done always seems to be one week away. January gives us an opportunity to re-evaluate and set goals for a new year on things we can do to make the lives of those around us we love, and our own life, even better. In essence, he gives us a chance for a fresh start every year. An interesting fact is that God does something similar, only far superior. For as long as we are breathing, God wants to do something new in our lives and January is a great time to start. In this passage in Isaiah, the prophet is letting the people know that God is offering them a chance to do something new, and that God is already working to do something new, but it will be up to them as to whether or

not they will join God and expe- rience His new work of love and forgiveness in their lives. The same is true for us all today. When Jesus came, he came to re-establish the relation- ship between God and man. The Bible says in Romans 3:23 that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” and then in Romans 6:23 he tells us “the wage of that sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord.” This gift is for everyone. It’s a gift of a fresh start. It’s a gift of a new relationship with God. Jesus wants to take all the bro- kenness of our lives upon him- self and exchange it for His love, joy and peace and give us a fresh start. As you enter this new year schedule a time with your friends to make the modifica- tions to your car you have been intending to do for a long time. Really, you’ll be glad you did. But more importantly, this January begin planning for a fresh start with God. If you aren’t plugged into a local church, go online and watch the services of four different churches in your community or nearby and decide to try four new ones and see if perhaps you won’t just find a fresh start with God. And when you experience God’s love in a new way, you will never regret it. I know I haven’t!
