FIND RELIEF FOR PERSISTENT NECK PAIN

The most common causes of neck pain The most common causes of neck pain are sprains and strains resulting from prolonged postures, repetitive movements, or some form of trauma (i.e., car accidents or sports injuries). More severe impairments of the neck are often related to degenerative changes, disc pathology, or nerve injuries. Often it is a combination of multiple factors and injuries. Poor postural habits like a forward head posture will place extra stress on the tissues and joints of the neck. Trauma, including a fall or some impact like a sports collision or whiplash from a car accident, can lead to neck pain and loss of mobility. Due to aging or previous injury, degenerative changes make us more susceptible to disc herniations, nerve irritation, and restrictions in the ability to move. The key to treating neck pain is finding a solution. Our physical therapists are experts at identifying the cause of your pain, how to resolve it and how to prevent it from returning!

Have you noticed your neck seems more sore at the end of a long workday? Have you been in an accident and still have neck pain? If you are suffering from the debilitating effects of neck pain, you may benefit from an assessment by one of our physical therapists at FYZICAL. Approximately one-third of the population will experience neck pain in any given year, worsening if left untreated. In severe cases, they may even need surgery. The neck is essential in the overall posture of the body. Where the head and neck move, so does the rest of the body. Changes in your neck can cause various symptoms such as neck tension, headaches, migraines, and even radiating pain or numbness to the arms and hands. The neck is an integral area of everyday movement, and pain can prevent you from functioning properly in day-to-day life. Fortunately, physical therapy can help you regain your normal, pain-free function. Call FYZICAL today to get the relief you deserve!

Physical therapy has proven successful in relieving long-term symptoms in patients experiencing both acute and chronic neck pain. Our therapists emphasize education and instruction on effective exercises and proper posture.

Our main goals are to:

• Reduce pain and improve motion with manual therapy techniques • Improve mobility through postural education and targeted movements/stretches • Improve strength to help you return to normal functioning in daily activities • Educate you on strategies and techniques to minimize the risk of recurring pain • Minimize and/or eliminate the use of medication or surgery Your therapist will perform a thorough assessment to identify the source of your problem and the solutions that work most effectively. RECIPE OF THE MONTH: VEGAN PUMPKIN PIE

INGREDIENTS • 15 ounce can pumpkin puree • 1 cup coconut cream • 1/2 cup brown sugar • 1/2 cup granulated sugar • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 1 teaspoon ginger • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

• 1/8 teaspoon cloves • 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 3 tablespoons cornstarch • 1 vegan store-bought pie crust • Vegan Whipped Cream optional, for serving

DIRECTIONS: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a pie crust in a pie plate. Add the canned pumpkin, coconut cream, brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, salt and cornstarch to a blender and blend until very smooth. You may also simply whisk it together in a bowl until smooth. Pour the mixture into a 9-inch pan lined with the pie crust. I don’t pre-cook the pie crust. Spread the mixture

evenly with a spatula. Bake for 1 hour. If the crust starts to burn, cover the edges of the crust with aluminum foil or a pie shield after about 30 minutes of baking. The middle will still look jiggly; that’s normal. Let cool at room temperature for 30 minutes, then cover and transfer to the refrigerator to chill for at least 4 hours or overnight. Slice and serve with homemade Vegan Whipped Cream or store-bought non-dairy whipped topping, if desired. Enjoy! Optional Pie Crust Leaves: A fun idea for decorating your pie! Make or buy an extra pie crust, and roll out the dough about 1/8th inch thick. Using leaf cookie cutters, cut into shapes. Place on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees F. Once the

pie has chilled, place on the pie for decoration. https://www.noracooks.com/vegan-pumpkin-pie/

BEING GRATEFUL IS GOOD FOR YOU

“All wonderful.” “Kelly Rider is the lead PT and DPT. I have been going here for work on my gait. I have had the pleasure of working with a majority of the PTAs Shaniqua, Barbara and Terrence. All wonderful.” — Barry

Did you know that being grateful is actually good for your health? It’s true! We all love Thanksgiving for the excellent food, football, and time spent with family, but truthfully, this holiday means much more. Practicing gratitude can lead to greater happiness all year long. According to Harvard Health Publishing, “Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.” If you want to implement more gratitude in your own life, take a look at these 3 tips. 1. Write thank you letters Remember writing thank you letters? How long has it been since you wrote one? You don’t need to have a wedding, graduation, or other big life event to thank the people in your life. Try writing thank you letters to your friends and family for the little things– you’ll be surprised at how good it feels! 2. Write down what you are grateful for everyday This might sound intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! Take a few minutes each morning or evening to write down at least 3 things that you are grateful for in your life. This repeated action helps us shift into a more positive mindset and can help fight symptoms of depression and anxiety. 3. Use visual reminders It can be hard to remember to practice gratitude. With your hectic schedule, sometimes it can feel impossible to sit down, take a moment to breathe, and reflect on your blessings. Visual cues can be a great tool for reminding us to take a beat. Something as simple as sticky notes, a poster, or even your home screen on your phone or laptop can help us remember to slow down and shift to a positive mindset.
