JUNE $, 1943 SUNDAY: USED OR ABUSED? D euteronomy 5 : 12 - 15 ; M ark 3 : 4 ; A cts 20:7 By Anne Hazelton Introduction Once Sarah Todd Cunningham, a visiting senator from then tranquil Hawaii, was asked her impression of ttye mainland. She said, “Too many people, in too many cars, in too much of a hurry, going in too many differ ent directions, to nowhere, for noth ing.” What an excellent one-sentence picture—particularly of our Sundays —but a few sljort months ago! Now, with tire and gas rationing, the pic ture has changed outwardly, but has it m e a n t increased attendance in many of our churches? Has it brought ally change to the multitude—yes, of Christians—who seem to be as indif ferent as the heathen to any proper respect and concern for the Lord’s day? A minister In England (quoted in the Alliance Weekly) has presented a heart-searching series of contrasts which God’s children everywhere will do well to heed: “We have been a pleasure-lov ing people, dishonoring God’s day; picnicking and- bathing. "How the seashores qre barred. “We have preferred motor trav el to church-going. Now there is ,a shortage of fuel.
“We. have ignored the ringing of the church bells calling us to worship. Now the bells cannot ring except to warn of invasion. “We have left the churches half empty w h e n they should have been filled with worshipers. Now
churches of our land are in ruin. “We would not listen to the way of peace. Now we are forced to the way of war. “The service we refused to give to God-r-now is conscripted for the country.”
