THE K I NG ' S BUS I NES S
Is not a day for selfish entertainment or amusement. It is not a day for idleness. There are thousands who use Sunday merely as a day of more sleeping, eating, and visiting. The Sunday papers bring with t h e m ‘ a flood of secular things to sweep over the soul that has not been nourished by the Word of God. On the part of many, there is no thought of God, no realization of Him at all. III. SUNDAY—USED. The first Lord’s day was the pat tern of all the Lord’s days that should follow. It began “very early in the morning,” continued with His pre cious fellowship, and closed with His benediction of peace. It was a day of worship, activity1, and joy. Sunday cannot be said to be a day of bodily rest for His servant. The risen Lord revealed the character of the day on that same early morning when He said, "Go tell.” It becomes an opportunity for many who are held by secular work during the days of the week to offer the fuller service of prayer, worship, and testimony which belongs to their Lord. The Lord’s day offers the height of op portunity for offsetting the down-pull of the week and for building up the ideals essential to Christian character. For the Leader Suggestions may be g i v e n that would help young people choose Sun day afternoon occupations that are in accord with the sacred character of the day. The Lord’s day is peculiarly a home day, the gift of God to the home to promote its spiritual inter ests, aims, and purposes. Sunday should not be a “can’t” day. It should be a planned day, one of the most delightful in the week. Bi ble games, or a Sunday afternoon “sing” of the family or with friends invited iii, will give satisfying fel lowship, and Christ will be honored. JUNE 13,1943 WHAT MAKES A CHURCH STRONG? A cts 2:1-4; E phesians 4:11-16 By Paul R. Bauman ■ Introduction A church is strong because it is composed of individual members who are spiritually strong. No church can have greater strength th^n that of the members who compose it. The secret of the church’s strength is al ways to be found in dealing with the individual. During ten y e a r s’ pastoral expe rience, the writer had t)ie opportunity of counseling with a large number of Christians, many of them young people, who *were out of fellowship with their Lord and who, as a result,

For Those Who Have Topics I. SUNDAY—OUR LORD’S DAY. We should understand the differ ence between the Jewish sabbath (Ex. 20:8), and the first day of the week, or the Lord’s day. The sabbath has direct reference to Israel and the earth. It was a precious link between Jehovah and His earthly people, a seal of His covenant with them, and a test of their devotedness to Him. With the Lord’s resurrection, a new day was divinely appointed under grace. Though it is true that there is no di rect commandment for the keeping of the Lord’s day, the very lack of com mand is both in accordance with the character of the new day and the en tire order of grace which it repre sents. The sabbath for Israel was the Seventh day. But the eighth day, or the first day of the week, indicates the beginning of that new order of things of which the cross is the im perishable foundation, and a risen Christ, the glorious head and center. In the early church, beginning with the resurrection, and following it, the outstanding events which had impor tant religious significance fell on the first day of the week (John 20:19-23; Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 16:2). The church emerged from the apostolic days with the first day of the week firmly es tablished as its day of worship, and apostolic example is equivalent to apostolic command. Thus we now worship God through Christ on what The Christian is under grace and free from the demands of the Mosaic law. He does not need to keep the Sabbath with all its restrictions, as a. means of salvation; indeed he is com manded not to do so. But this does not mean that he is free to amuse and indulge himself on the Lord’s day. It is truly the Lord’s day. II. SUNDAY—ABUSED.
