August 22 Thursday 9:30 a.m. or 11:00 a.m.

Renewal for a New Era Johnson County Historic Poor Farm (4811 Melrose Ave, Iowa City)

In 1855, Johnson County procured 160 acres of land to establish the Johnson County Historic Poor Farm. The County ran and operated the farm under the poor farm model until 1988. In recent years, Johnson County has worked to renew the farm. Join us as Alexandra McKendree, Executive Director of the Johnson County Historical Society, shares about both the difficult history and the new era of the farm. She will share about how the renewal of this historic farm has been informed by the farm’s past as well as the needs of the current community, including the rehabilitation of historic buildings, returning the land to prairie and local food production, and planning for new features such as a commercial kitchen. Following the tour, the farm’s Healing Trail will be open to walk. Note: This outdoor tour will involve periods of time walking and standing. Register by Monday, August 19.
