Casino Wages and Operation Impact Tribal Gaming Wages

Wages paid to employees of Tribal government gaming and its ancillary businesses in 2020 amounted to $7,073,829,893. Through its PPP loan programs, the federal government funded Tribal casinos an additional $2,395,008,669. The PPP loans were provided to keep casino employees on the payroll when COVID-19 was forcing casinos to close and lay off significant numbers of their workers.

Although wages continued to be paid to Tribal casino employees at a reduced cost, they were supported by payments made through the PPP loan program that maintained their spending levels in the economy. What was impacted was job generation, which we see fall significantly when comparing 2020 job impacts to 2019. Casino hotels had the largest decrease among all private industries, losing an average of 263 jobs per establishment. That was 3.5 times greater than the industry with next largest job loss, amusement, and theme parks. That industry lost 75 jobs per establishment on average in 2020. Some industries gained jobs in 2020. Warehouse clubs and supercenters had the largest increase among private industries. Employment at the average warehouse clubs and supercenters establishment increased by 19 jobs in 2020. Second highest was general warehousing and storage, which added 16 jobs per establishment during 2020. Although, Tribal casino employees maintained their spending levels in the economy, the impacts of COVID-19 on the number of jobs generated in 2020 declined (16,548). As for labor income, it was slightly up at $420,091,415. Value added was up too, at $196,207,913 and output came in marginally up $892,749,611 when compared to 2019.
