. I. A Promise to You “The land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it” (Gen. 28:13). Where Jacob “lighted,” and tarried, and rested, there he took possession . . . All the promises of God are yea and amen in Christ Jesus; and as He is ours, every promise is ours if we will but lie down upon it in restful faith. . . Be sure that the promise is thy God-given por tion, and that it will not be robbery for thee to take it to thyself, as spoken specially to thee. —Charles Haddoh Spurgeon. 2. The Result of the Conflict “For the good that I would, I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do” (Rom. 7:19). I ask you to notice what is the result of this conflict. Defeat? Nothing of the kind. . . . The whole point of the passage is victory, not defeat. And if these two opposing forces are placed in battle array, by faith the result will be victory. Instead of that terrible temper, God will give you. such a victory that you will be known as the man with the swCet temper.—S. M. Warner. Strengthen These Things "Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain” (Rev. 3:2). Men write their own creeds with no cross and no blood, Their sin and their Saviour together left out; v Some myths and some fables the old Book contains, And the little they leave us is sadly in doubt; The Lord's solemn warnings are uttered in vain, And the faith of their fathers they scornfully flout. But one God still remains, the righteous, the just; . One Saviour still offers salvation and ■ rest; To the doubts and the fears of the truth seeking soul One sure Word still gives its own light for the quest; One city, whose Builder and Maker is God, Still stands, and forever, the home of the blest. —Annie Johnson Flint. 4. An Ignorant Petition “Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory” (Mk. 10:37). This petition of the disciples was an ignorant, one. And oh! remember that in 3.
our prayer and consecration there are often terrible mistakes and much ignor ance; but irts ever our comfort to know that Jesus spoke very kindly and ten derly to those disciples. . . . What were their mistakes? One was that they were asking for the fruit, and the root had not been planted. And we are always wanting only the fruit and the blessing, but Christ wants us to have, the root deep down.—Andrew Murray. 5. A “ Spiritual Habit” "On thee do I wait all the day” (Psa. 25:5). We have not really entered into the secret place of the Most High if we can leave it behind. . . . If spiritual readiness is to be ours, it will demand a spiritual habit and not merely an occasional act. For it implies a way of living. It means that, the soul keeps itself reverently posed toward the eternal with an alert readiness to know and to do the will of the Lord.—J. H. Jowett. 6. Dwelling with the King for His Work "These were the potters, . . . there they dwelt with the king for his work” (1 Chron. 4:23). Anywhere *and everywhere we may dwell “with the king for his work.” We may be in a very unfavorable place for this. It may be in a little country life, with little enough to be seen of the doings of the King around us; it may be among hedges of all sorts, . . . full ot all manner of pottery for our daily task. No matter! The King who places us there will come and dwell there witlj us.—Frances Ridley Havergal. 7. Praying in the Spirit “Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Rom, 8:26). Wait at the divine footstool until your prayers are indited by Him. . . . When soever you feel the inward movement of God’s Spirit, yield to it! He will correct and prune from your prayers all that should not be in them. He will lead you
