Absentee Voting Underway in Alabama The absentee voting period for the May 24, 2022 Primary Election is underway. Important absentee voting deadlines are as following: • May 17, 2022: The last day that absentee ballot applications can be returned by mail. • May 19, 2022: The last day that absentee ballot applications can be returned by hand. • May 23, 2022: The last day to return absentee ballots by hand to the Absentee Election Manager. • May 24, 2022: Absentee ballots must be returned by mail to the absentee election manager no later than noon. Absentee ballot applications can be downloaded online or requested by visiting or calling the local Absentee Election Manager’s office. Voters may also contact the Secretary of State’s Elections Division at (334) 242-7210 to request an absentee ballot application. Voters who are eligible to vote pursuant to the Uniformed and Overseas Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) will have until May 24 to postmark an absentee ballot. Equipment Grants Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has awarded grants totaling $115,761 to help five law enforcement agencies in Alabama purchase new or update existing equipment. These include: (1) The city of Lake View in Tuscaloosa County is using $24,000 to purchase cameras for the Lake View Police Department’s patrol units, officers and for use within the police department; (2) The city of Attalla in Etowah County is using $24,000 to purchase equipment for the Attalla Police Department, including a new cargo trailer to store crime scene investigation equipment, laptops for patrol cars and stop spike strips to stop high-speed pursuits; (3) The Henry County Commission is using $24,000 to purchase and replace Tasers for the Henry County Sheriff’s Office and detention facility. The Tasers will help allow deputies to deescalate a situation without the need for lethal force and reduce injuries for all parties involved; (4) With $23,471 in grant funds, the Winston County Commission will purchase new Tasers and speed detection radars for patrol vehicles for the Winston County Sheriff’s Office. These will increase deputies’ ability to subvert potentially dangerous situations and to reduce speed-related crashes; (5) A $20,290 grant to the Town of McKenzie will outfit a new police vehicle and replace outdated laptop computers for the McKenzie Police Department. In a different announcement, Governor Ivey has awarded additional grants totaling $101,025 to help five additional law enforcement agencies to help purchase new or update existing equipment. These include: (1) The Dity of Greenville is using $24,000 to replace old electronic stun guns used by the Greenville Police Department; (2) The city of Butler in Choctaw County is using $14,034 to purchase dash-mounted video cameras for Butler Police Department patrol vehicles; (3) The town of Maplesville in Chilton County is using $24,000 to purchase and install three automated license plate readers for the Maplesville Police Department. These devices allow law enforcement agencies to compare plate numbers against those of stolen cars or cars driven by people suspected of being involved in criminal activity; (4) With $24,000 in grant funds, the city of Tarrant in Jefferson County will purchase digital tablets, printers and mounting brackets for five patrol vehicles used by the Tarrant Police Department. This will enable the department to manage patrol routes more effectively; and (5) A $14,991 grant to the Etowah County Commission will help start a self-sustainable Digital Forensics Center at the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office. The center will be made available to surrounding agencies for use in criminal investigations. The equipment helps extract and analyze information from cell phones. Four other law enforcement departments also received equipment grants from Governor Ivey in the amount of $64,000. These include: (1) University of Alabama Campus Police - $2,332 to purchase bullet-proof vests; (2) Adamsville - $23,380 to purchase and install a “Live Scan” fingerprint system; (3) Cedar Bluff - $14,225 to purchase radar machines for patrol vehicles; and (4) Clayhatchee- $24,000 to purchase a patrol vehicle. Hurricane Recovery Funds Alabama Governor Kay Ivey recently announced that almost $312 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds have been allocated to Alabama for recovery from Hurricanes Sally and Zeta, which battered the coastal areas of the state in fall 2020. A majority of the funds are designated by HUD for the areas most impacted by the hurricanes, which include all of Mobile and Baldwin counties as well as the 36502 zip code in western Escambia County. Showdown softball game between the University of Alabama and Jacksonville State has been rescheduled for Wednesday, October 12, 2022. The event was originally scheduled for this Spring, but was postponed due to weather condition.
