usual tirade against these schools because they are “godless”—godless because Prot estants were foolish enough to comply with the Roman request that the Bible should not be read—was retailed to the immense au dience. Then the priest charged that “the lack of respect fof womanhood, divorce and race suicide” prevalent in America were the direct result of having no religious in struction. Are they?* Is womanhood as highly respected in Catholic countries as in Protestant countries? You have only to contrast Britain and the United States with the countries under the rule of Rome, to answer in the negative. Divorce? Well, that is infinitely better than the promiscuous state of things in Roman lands. “Race sui cide?” How dare this man bring up such a subject in the face of the awful revelation of the state of things in Convents ? These charges' are absolutely false .—Watchword and Truth. A mong other answers of great American bankers as to their position on the drink question were the following: ■“We insist upon total abstinence as far as practicable.” “Will not take on a drinking man if we know it.” “ Such as practice total abstinence are pre ferred.” “We would not at all employ persons ad dicted to the use of intoxicants.” “We employ only abstainers.” “ Would discharge habitual drinkers im mediately.” ' “Men of good habits are in themselves evidence as to the standing of an institution like ours.” . “When we ascertain that any are drinking we endeavor to put a stop to it.” “We will have only sober men on our staff.” “All understand that habitual use of stim ulants would undoubtedly lead to discharge.” T he H idden P ower . —Behind every new missionary effort there is somewhere a new
reasons for the failure of Catholicism to produce a spiritual constituency; and are a warning to the United States. But is our ■Protestant Church in danger of missing its “ spiritual mission” by similar dabbling in politics ? A magic name is that of Jew. Scripture says of it, “an astonishment,” “a proverb,” “a by-word among all nations,” “a hissing,” “an execration,” “a curse,” and “a reproach.” At the same time Scripture says of it, “a name of joy,” “a praise and an honor before all the nations,” “a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord,” “graven of God upon the palms of His hands.” Wondrous name— the combination and solution of such oppo- sitep. It is the bush of Moses: through thousands of years ever burning, and yet to this day not quite burnt. It is as Aladdin’s lamp: rub it, and ‘at once appears the most sumptuous intellectual feast of ancient things; rub it again, and grandest scenes yet to be enacted are dazzling the eye. T he G ideons , the well-known aggressive order of Christian commercial travelers, have carried their campaign for supplying hotel rooms with Bibles to a point where 160,000 rooms in high-grade hotels have now been “Bibleized.” They are increasing this number at the rate of 5000 rooms per month. In addition, many thousands of rooms have been supplied through other agencies imitating the Gideons or by propri etors who have taken the idea from them. The most extraordinary testimonies come to the Gideon leaders of the good that their Bibles have accomplished. One man con verted by this means has since been instru mental in the conversion of fifty-five Italian laborers, thirty-five of whom he has brought into connection with the church which he himself joined after becoming a Christian. T he Rev. Dr. O’Rourke (Jesuit) has just given a strong address against our Ameri can public schools, before the Knights of Columbus in Carnegie Hall, New York. The
