STAFF UPDATES MADD New England is excited to announce our newest staff member, Lisa Rivers!! Lisa has been hired as a part-time Victim Services Specialist for MADD Maine.

My name is Lisa Rivers. I am from Maine and currently live in Winthrop, which is a small town and wonderful community located in the middle of Maine. Winthrop is surrounded by lakes, just 10 minutes from the State’s capital, and the town right next door to where I grew up. I have two sons; Hayden is 20 years old, and Carter is 17. I also have a 12 year old dog named Jetson and a 10 year old cat name Kitty Kitty. I worked in the criminal justice field for 15 years. 5 of those years as a victim/witness advocate. It has always been my passion to be a mom, and to help others. I am excited to start this new journey with the MADD team and making a difference one victim at a time. I enjoy spending time with my two boys, watching them play sports and taking care of them. In the summer I try to spend most of my free time on the lake or at the ocean with family and friends, or even alone with a good book and some music. I enjoy downhill skiing in the winter. I also enjoy traveling and going to church.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Congratulations to Angela Loprete our June Volunteer of the Month for MADD Connecticut! On January 28, 2010, Angela’s daughter Maryann was killed by a drunk driver just 2 weeks shy from her 28th birthday. The drunk driver was three times above the legal limit of .08. Angela has advocated throughout the years giving testimony at the State Capitol to change drunk driving laws and attended Walk Like MADD events in a hopes to create a future of No More Victims. We are truly grateful for Angela and her family.

Saturday, May 25th, New England Regional Executive Director Bob Garguilo travelled to Vermont in support of the Miles Family, who lost their six year old daughter Olivia in a drunk driving crash one year ago. Olivia's parents hosted Ride for Olivia in recognition of the one year anniversary of Olivia's death and in support of MADD New England. With the funds raised, MADD New England will be creating the Olivia Miles Educational Fund which will enable us to provide school programs in the state of Vermont. Thank you to all who came out in support of the Miles family and in memory of sweet Olivia.

In The Community!

Survivor/Volunteer Amie Joseph spoke at Waltham High School in Massachusetts in April ahead of prom and graduation. Amie shared her personal story in addition to underage drinking prevention education.

On June 12th, MADD Massachusetts honored over 45 law enforcement officers and troopers from all over the Commonwealth at our annual Awards Breakfast held in Devens. It was a special morning as we recognized those individuals for their excellence in OUI enforcement and their efforts to keep our roadways safe. Keynote speakers included Erin Rollins, National MADD Ambassador and crash survivor, and Jake Nelson, Director, Traffic Safety Advocacy & Research for AAA. Congratulations and thank you to all our award winners; thank you and keep up the amazing work!

Friday May 24th, we held our 7th Annual Ferrara Fun Walk at DH Ferrara Elementary School in East Haven. Every student took one lap around the track each day at recess in honor and in memory of victims and survivors of impaired driving crashes. On the last day, the entire school came together for an assembly and their final lap, ending in an epic dance party to celebrate their achievements. Together, the students raised almost $1700 in support of MADD Connecticut. We are so proud of each and every student and we cherish the partnership we have built over the last 7 years. Thank you Ferrara Elementary School!

Community donations are a key to success and raising funds for MADD New England as is event promotion for the businesses. We offer pre-event benefits to let our participants and constituents know of the generosity that we receive including social media posts, website recognition and event day signage. Our events raise the funds necessary to provide educational awareness programs to youth and their parents, provide advocacy programs at no cost to victims of alcohol-related crashes and their families, and to continue educating the community about the dangers of drinking and driving and underage drinking.

Interested in a sponsorship? Whether donating time, funding, or other resources, we are grateful for the generosity shown to us over the years. If you’d like to learn more about these opportunities, please reach out to your local office for more information.
