The Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) is a world leading translational research institute. Our research focuses on cancer, infectious diseases, men- tal health and a range of complex diseases.

New Research by QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and the university of Queensland has re- vealed how lowering cholesterol could potentially prevent or help stop the spread of prostate cancer. The researchers made the discovery after identifying a change in function of the hnRNPK protein in people with advanced prostrate cancer. Their laboratory tests show lowering cholesterol can help control the release of hnRNPK protein from prostrate cancer cells. The protein is released in small particles called exosomes - which prostrate cancer cells send out to prepare other parts of the body for cancer spread. The team is now developing a prototype blood test to detect the level of released hnRNPK, which may one day be used to identify patients who should be given cholesterol lowing drugs to prevent Metastases. The lead researcher from QIMR Berghofer ’ s Precision and Systems Biomedicine Group, Ms Harley Robinson, said the hnRNPK protein controls the content of the exosomes sent out by prostate cancer cells to prepare other parts of the body for the spreading disease. ” The hnRNPK protein usually resides in the nucleus of a cell buy\t our laboratory tests on prostate cancer cells found the protein outside the nucleus, in the messaging centre where the exosomes are being prepared, and in exosomes that have been released by cells, ” said Ms Robinson, who has conducted the research as part of her PhD studies at the University of Queensland.

The exosomes act like a pre - planting conditioner that makes the environment in the new parts of the body receptive to the cancer cells when they eventually reach the site.

Our lab work showed that reducing the cholesterol levels or boosting OMEGA - 3 levels in the cells could stop the hnRNPK message fro leaving the cancer cell and spreading its dangerous message. ”

Senior researcher and head of QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute ’ s Precision and Systems Biomedicine Group, Associate Professor Michelle Hill said cholesterol and OMEGA - 3 levels in cells regulate each other, but in cancer the balance gets shifted with cholesterol dominating the cells. “ This understanding of the role cholesterol plays in sending out these metastatic messages to other parts of the body, means we could potentially use statins or other cholesterol lowering drugs to prevent metastases, ” Associate Professor Hill said. “ Conversely it might be possible to boost OMEGA - 3 levels through supplements to protect against cancer spread. The findings are very exciting and we think this hnRNPK protein might play a role in metastases in other cancers as well, but it is early days and more research is needed to confirm the link. ”

The laboratory research was conducted on human cells and then validated in patient samples.

Our pilot study of samples from eight prostate cancer patients revealed the release of hnRNPK outside the cell was 100 percent accurate despite treatment, ” said Associate Professor Hill. We are hopeful a blood test using this biomarker would allow doctors to identify patients who should be given re - purposed cholesterol lowering drugs to prevent cancer spread, but also detect patients who are unlikely to have problems with metastases and therefore could safely avoid additional, morbid treatments. ”

10

The researchers plan to soon evaluate a larger group of samples, which will be selected from a com- pleted prostate cancer clinical trial led by Emeritus Professor Frank Gardiner and Dr Matthew Roberts (Consultant Urologist at RBWH & UQ Centre for Clinical Research).

The research findings are published in the journal Clinical and Translational Medicine . The project was primarily supported by the Australian Research Council and RSL Stephens sub - branch.

It involved collaborators from Griffith University, University of Western Australia and Ochsner Health Systems, New Orleans, USA.

Quick facts:

Prostate cancer that remains within the prostate (localised prostate cancer) is highly curable, but prognosis is poor for men with advanced prostate cancer that spreads through the body.

About four per cent of prostate cancer cases are detected at an advanced, metastatic stage and less than 40 per cent of those men with metastatic or Stage IV prostate cancer survive longer than 5 years.

Metastatic prostate cancer can also develop many years after a patient ’ s initial treatment and when they thought they were free of the disease

Currently, there is no specific test to detect cancer metastasis. Doctors monitor rising levels of the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) protein in the blood to detect recurrence, but the protein is not elevated in all prostate cancer cases, and is not involved in the metastatic process.

Insightful Books for the healing journey

Anti Cancer = A NEW WAY OF LIFE - Dr David Servan - Schreiber

‘ All of us have cancer cells in our bodies. But not all of us will develop cancer. ’ This international bestseller, now revised with the latest research, examines what we can do every day to lower our chances of ever developing the illness, and also explains what to do to increase the chances of recovery from it. After he was diagnosed with cancer of the brain while working as a medical resident in Pittsburgh, Dr Servan - Schreiber went on to research alternative medicine and founded and directed a Centre of Integrative Medicine at the highly conservative University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre. This book is a culmination of his experience in the field of cancer, as a doctor and as a patient. He looks, in particular, at the relation between a body and its cancer; at the immune system; and the roles played by environmental toxins, nutrition, emotions and physical activity in containing cancer. Servan - Schreiber does not dismiss conventional medicine, nor is he anti - pharmaceutical - he empowers the reader with the understanding and the tools to tackle cancer alongside conventional treatments - or, better yet, to help avoid cancer altogether.

In her New York Times bestseller , Radical Remission: Surviving Cancer Against All Odds , Dr. Kelly A. Turner , founder of the Radical Remission Project, uncovers nine factors that can lead to a spontaneous remission from cancer—even after conventional medicine has failed. While getting her Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkley, Dr. Turner, a researcher, lecturer, and counsellor in integrative oncology, was shocked to discover that no one was studying episodes of radical (or unexpected) remission - when people recover against all odds without the help of conventional medicine, or after conventional medicine has failed. She embarked on a 10 month trip around the world, traveling to ten different countries to interview 50 holistic healers and 20 radical remission cancer survivors about their healing practices and techniques. Her research continued by interviewing over 100 Radical Remission survivors and studying over 1000 of these cases. Her evidence presents 9 common themes that she believes may help even terminal patients turn their lives around.

The Metabolic Approach to Cancer - Dr. Nasha Winters, ND, L.Ac., FABNO and Jess Higgins Kelley, MNT.

The Metabolic Approach to Cancer offers an innovative, metabolic - focused nutrition protocol that works. Naturopathic, integrative oncologist and cancer survivor Dr. Nasha Winters and nutrition therapist Jess Higgins Kelley have identified the ten key elements of a person's "terrain" (a topographical map of our body) that are crucial to preventing and managing cancer. Each of the terrain ten elements —including epigenetics, the microbiome, the immune system, toxin exposures, and blood sugar balance — is illuminated as it relates to the cancer process, then given a heavily researched and tested, non - toxic and metabolic, focused nutrition prescription .

All the books listed above are available on Amazon to purchase or ask your local library to consider making them available to the community as a library book. Shared information: a valuable resource.

The Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR) is a world leading translational re- search institute. Our research focuses on cancer, infectious diseases, mental health and a range of complex diseases.

QIMR Berghofer led research has identified genes that appear to increase a person ’ s risk of

Endometrial Cancer in findings which could help the discovery of new treatments and therapies.

The researchers say there is a need for more treatment options as the disease becomes increasingly prevalent with more than 3000 new endometrial cancer cases and 550 deaths in Australia each year.

The study, led by QIMR Berghofer Associate Professors Tracy O ’ Mara and Dylan Glubb,

analysed summary data on more than 100,000 individuals from the Endometrial Cancer Association Consortium - the world ’ s largest genetic study of endometrial cancer in addition to identifying genes

that appear to affect endometrial cancer risk, we also identified the actual tissues that some of these

genes may act in. This is quite exciting, as this information can give us an important insight into the underlying biology of endometrial cancer and its development.

“ Associate Professor Glubb said they had already used their results to identify potential new therapies, including a drug that is currently undergoing clinical trials for use in other cancers.

“ Now we have identified potential risk genes, we can search for drugs that target the products of those genes or counteract the changes in gene expression linked to endometrial cancer susceptibility, ” he said. We ’ ve already found one candidate which is currently in phase three clinical trials for brain cancer and lymphoma. It hasn ’ t been studied for endometrial cancer but our data suggests it could be promising. ”

The QIMR Berghofer researchers have been working with a company that uses artificial intelligence to find drugs which target the products of specific genes. “ Their study, published in the journal

Communications Biology , also involved researchers from the Queensland University of Technology, the

Mayo Clinic in the United States, Belgium ’ s Laboratory for Translational Genetics and Germany ’ s

Hannover Medical School. It was supported by a National Health and Medical Research Council project grant.

.

Quick Facts: Endometrial cancer is a cancer of the lining of the womb or uterus. It is the most common type of gynaecological cancer in high - income countries like Australia. Each year, there are more than 3’000 new cases and 550 deaths from endometrial cancer across the country. Rates of endometrial cancer are increasing and more women are being diagnosed with this cancer every year. This is probably due in part to the increasing prevalence of obesity in the population. Although survival rates for endometrial cancer are very good overall - the chance of a woman surviving for at least five years after her diagnosis is 83 per cent - the number of women dying of endometrial cancer are increasing. By comparison, Australia ’ s five - year survival rate for breast cancer in women is 91 per cent.

TURMERIC - The Super Spice

Turmeric is gaining in popularity, and for very good reason!

The yellow pigment found in turmeric, which is also responsible for the majority of its medicinal properties, is called “ curcumin ”.

Study abstracts from the National Library of Medicine ’ s bibliographic database known as MEDILINE show over 600 potential health benefits of turmeric, and/or its primary polyphenol known as curcumin.

Curcumin is the active compound you want to absorb from eating turmeric. However, a big problem with turmeric is that curcumin isn ’ t easily absorbed.

Various animal and clinical studies reveal that the concentrations of Curcumin in blood plasma, urine and peripheral tissues, if detectable at all, are extremely low regardless of dosage. And low absorption rate will not give you the health benefits of this pack - a - punch medicinal food. While no food or herb is right for everyone, and everything has the potential for unintended, adverse side effects, turmeric is truly unique in its exceptionally high margin of safety vis - à - vis the drugs it has been compared with, e.g. hydrocortisone, ibuprofen, chemotherapy agents. Furthermore, nothing within the modern - day pharmaceutical armamentarium comes even remotely close to turmeric ’ s 6,000 year track record of safe use in Ayurvedic medicine.

How to Skyrocket Turmeric ’ s Bioavailability There are simple kitchen strategies that you can use to boost turmeric ’ s bioavailability

Always Mix with Black Pepper

Black Pepper is a powerful medicine in its own right and a Potent Turmeric Adjuvant. If people are given a bunch of turmeric curcumin, within an hour there ’ s a little bump in the level in their blood stream. We don ’ t see a large increase because our liver is actively trying to get rid of it. But what if the process is suppressed by tak- ing just a quarter teaspoon ’ s worth of black pepper? Then you see curcumin levels skyrocket. The same amount of curcumin consumed, but the bioavailability shoots up 2000%

Even just a little pinch of pepper - 1/20th of a teaspoon - can significantly boost levels. And guess what a com- mon ingredient in curry powder is besides turmeric?

“ Black Pepper ”

One Study entitled: Influence of peperine on the pharmacokinetics of curcumin in animals and human volun- teers demonstrated that when peperine was co - administered with curcumin and given to human subjects the bioavailability of curcumin increased 2000%.

GOLDEN MILK TEA

Add a Healthy Fat to Turmeric

A WARM DELICIOUS SUPER DRINK

Since turmeric is fat - soluble, in order for your body to fully absorb it and experience its amazing health benefits, turmeric needs to be combined with a fat. When eaten with healthy fats, such as coconut, ghee or olive oil, curcumin can be directly absorbed into the bloodstream through the lymphatic system thereby in part bypassing the liver. This is very important because less curcumin is exposed to metabolic enzymes and remains in a free form allowing it to stay in the body longer.

Ingredients:

1 cup milk (almond, coconut, or organic cow ’ s milk)

1 teaspoon raw organic cocont oil

1/4 teaspoon turmeric paste (or more, to taste) Honey, to taste (unpasteurized and local, if you can get it)

Heat increases Turmeric ’ s Bioavailability

Directions:

“ The Potent ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, which, despite its power, is not easily absorbed by the body without assistance. This is where the sauté pan and a little warm oil or Ghee come into play, ” Dr Saraswati Sukumar, a medical oncologist at Johns Hopkins, not only commands research data on the root that grows abundantly in south Asia and is used extensively in the Indian subcontinent and southeast Asia, she uses the spice liberally in her own kitchen, Regularly flavouring sautés with turmeric. While the simplest way to take curcumin may be to pop a supplement pill, says Dr. Sukumar, it ’ s not as effective as when consumed as a spice in foods. “ The problem with the pill is that it is very insoluble in water, ” she said. “ The better way to take it is to use it in your cooking very extensively. If you have any sauté, just sprinkle it in. The moment you heat oil and add turmeric to it, it now becomes bio - available to you. ”

Combine all ingredients except honey in a small saucepan. Cook on medium heat, stirring constantly. When completely blended and hot (but not boiling), remove from heat and add honey to taste, stirring until dissolved.

Turmeric Paste Ingredients:

1/4 cup turmeric powder or 1 - inch knob of fresh turmeric, finely grated

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

1/2 cup filtered water

Optional: 1/8 teaspoon powdered ginger or 1/2 inch piece of fresh ginger, finely grated

Directions:

Cook all ingredients together in a small saucepan on medium heat. Stir well until the mixture thickens - it doesn't take long. When a paste has formed, remove from heat and allow to cool.

Notes will be provided on the preparation and use of the Frankincense resins.

The $95.00 charge for the Workshop reflects the cost of the Frankincense resins and carrier oils, but I believe there is no substitute for quality. PLEASE CONFIRM REGISTRATION HERE, WITH PAYMENT OF A 50% DEPOSIT. PAYMENT OF THE BALANCE IS REQUIRED TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THE WORKSHOP (3 MAY 2022). In keeping with Cansurvive’s policies, there is a 10% discount for Concession Card Holders.

I look forward to joining you on the day: Linda Broman, The CatBird Alchemist
