Founded in 1956, the International Robert Schumann Competition moved to Zwickau, the birthplace of Robert Schumann, in 1963. It has two categories: piano and singing. Pianists, and male and female singers are judged separately and are each awarded a first to third prize. A special prize for the best song accompanist was first awarded in 1989. Since 1996, the Competition takes place every four years.
