Herceg Novi is among the rare places in the world to have devoted an entire annual festival to the mimosa tree, celebrating life, joy, inner goodness, love and friendship
I magine that, instead of a bustling city centre, you step into a scene from early in the 20 th century. Ele- gant formal attire, aromas emanat- ing from the market, window dis- plays and signs in vintage fonts, classic cars from a century ago – every detail ar- ranged in such a way that it seems like you’ve travelled back though time. That’s precisely how Herceg Novi city centre looked during the recent shooting of Rus- sian feature film Battle of Engines, for which this Mediterranean city was cho- sen as the perfect backdrop. Herceg Novi locals and visitors have al- ready been able to take a “sneak peek” at some scenes from the film, which will be released to the public next year. The story revolves around the early days of the au- to industry and a motor race from St. Pe- tersburg to Monaco. We won’t reveal any more details, but it’s important to note that Herceg Novi won over the cast and crew of this major project with its beauty. And that was no accident. Herceg No- vi has increasingly found itself on the map of filmmakers in recent years, while it is already recognised in European pro- duction circles as the centre of filmmak- ing in Montenegro. Authentic architec- ture, a mild climate and hospitable locals make it the ideal choice when sets require a special atmosphere, whether they evoke bygone times or create a new story. period ahead and will focus on the story of the local Mimosa Festival, as a unique Herceg Novi symbol and phenomenon. This festival, which has a tradition dating back 57 years, will this year bring the car- nival spirit to the Novi Riviera from 13 th to 28 th February (www.praznikmimoze. me). While this region and the rest of Eu- rope are still under snow, Herceg Novi will don yellow and green garb and dance for two weeks, complete with live music,
wine, fish specialities, masquerade balls and guests from all over the world – and that’s something that’s really worth see- ing, and filming! Perhaps you’ll have the desire to enjoy the scents of summer and the sea; to fill your life with cheerfulness, vibrance and tenacity. Because if you’re a flower, then be a mimosa – as Victor Hugo said, but if you like a good party, then come to Her- ceg Novi for this mimosa holiday!
