SLAVIMO NAJRADOSNIJI HRIŠĆANSKI PRAZNIK HRISTOST SE RODI, VAISTINU SE RODI Božić je jedinstvena sinteza verskog i paganskog, narodnog i crkvenog, porodičnog i nacionalnog – to je glavni zimski praznik

WE’RE CELEBRATING THE MOST JOYOUS CHRISTIAN HOLIDAY CHRIST IS BORN, TRULY HE IS BORN Christmas is a unique synthesis of the religious and the pagan, a folk and church holiday, a family and national celebration – it is the main winter holiday A lthough it cannot be confirmed with cer- tainty precisely when the mass celebrat- ing of Christmas began among the Serbs, there’s no doubt that this holiday was ob- served in certain forms during medieval times. Christmas Eve, when the whole family awaits the announcing of Christ’s birth, represents a point in time and space when both ancestors and descendants gather in the glory of the Son of God. It all begins on the sixth day of January, when Christ- mas Eve is celebrated, marking the last and strictest day of the Nativity Fast. Christmas Day follows, and the hol- iday continues, with the table not cleared and the house not cleaned until St. Stephen’s Day (9 th January).

ada se ne može sa sigurnošću tvrditi ka- da se tačno počelo s masovnim proslav- ljanjem Božića u Srba, nema sumnje da su određene forme ovog praznika pošto- vane još u srednjem veku. Badnji dan, a

osobito Badnje veče, kada čitava porodica dočekuje objavu rođenja Hristovog, momenat je kada se u slavu Sina Bož- jeg okupljaju i preci i potomci. Sve počinje šestog dana januara, kada se proslavlja Badnji dan, ujedno poslednji i najstroži dan božićnog po- sta. Sledi Božić, a praznik traje, trpeza se ne sklanja i ku- ća ne čisti sve do Svetog Stefana (9. januar).
