SAVINDAN 27. JANUAR / 27 TH JANUARY

Saint Sava

Bio je ključan u uspostavljanju Srpske pravoslavne crkve / Saint Sava is one of the most significant figures in the history of the Serbian people. He was instrumental in establishing the Serbian Orthodox Church

WITH LOVE FOR SAINT SAVA

The Feast of Saint Sava is a Serbian Orthodox Church holiday celebrated on 27 th January and commemorating this prince of the Nemanjić dynasty, Serbian educator and first Serbian archbishop. It was on the date of 27 th January (14 th according to the Julian calendar) in the year 1236 that Saint Sava passed away in the Bulgarian city of Trnovo. The famous Hymn to Saint Sava was first sung in the early 19 th century, while his feast became a school holiday in Serbia according to an 1840 law. Born as Rastko Nemanjić in 1175, he was the youngest son of the Great Prefect Stefan Nemanja and Ana Nemanjić, daughter of Byzantine Emperor Romanus. As a child he would regularly attend church services, taking a particular interest in icons. He met a monk at the age of 17 and soon afterwards left his father’s house and accompanied the monk to Saint

Panteleimon Monastery on Holy Mount Athos. It was there that he became a monk in 1192, receiving the name Sava. Sava became a deacon and priest of Hilandar Monastery at the beginning of the 13 th century, then an archimandrite in Thessaloniki. It was in 1219 that the Ecumenical Patriarch at the court of the Byzantine Empire in Nicaea proclaimed Sava the first Serbian archbishop. It is thanks to him that the Serbian Orthodox Church became autocephalous, i.e. independent. He died in Trnovo on 27 th January 1236 and King Vladislav transferred his relics to Mileševa Monastery sometime around 1237, but the Ottomans (more precisely Grand Vizier Sinan Pasha) burned them in 1595 on the Vračar plateau in Belgrade. That spot is today occupied by one of the world’s largest Orthodox churches – the magnificent Temple of Saint Sava.
