I f you want to get to know part of Eastern Serbia, head for the mu- nicipality of Boljevac in the Za- ječar district with at least seven days to spare, because this area is often dubbed the Gate of Eastern Serbia. Mystical Mountain and Sanctuary The most famous natural pyramidal for- mation in Serbia, Rtanj, is one of the most interesting geographical points that’s worthy of making the journey to the east of Serbia. Shaped almost like a regular pyramid, this mountain domi- nates the basin of the Black River (Cr- na Reka), while Rtanj’s highest peak, Šil- jak, stands at an altitude of 1,565 metres above sea-level. Often visited by lovers of mountain climbing, ascents of Rtanj
are regularly organised, while the local mountaineering club’s most important activities include the midnight ascent on the holiday of Vidovdan (St. Vitus Day, 28 th June) and the ascent of the young- est in September. It is interesting to note that the first collective ascent of this mountain was organised by famous bot- anist Josif Pančić in 1901. Rtanj’s en- demic and relict flora and fauna also led to it being declared a special nature re- serve in 2018. The village of Rtanj is located at the foot of the mountain. It attracts tour- ists seeking fresh mountain air and ac- tive holidays, because here you can walk health trails and “barefoot trails” that lead to pine forests and an observation point that offers the most beautiful view of the mountain.
