Afaaq Thaqafiyya – Cultural Blueprintsُ يعد O One of the greatest nation-builders of all times, and a human- ist and philanthropist of legendary repute, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, ‘Architect of modern UAE’, laid the founda- tion of a modern welfare state rooted in Arab-Islamic traditions, and built a sustainable society based on human empowerment, equality, justice, tolerance and peaceful co-existence. A scion of the Al Nahyan Royal Family, Sheikh Zayed was gifted with a majestic appearance and supreme qualities of head and heart which formed the essence of his unique greatness. He inher- ited outstanding leadership skills from his illustrious Al Nahyan ancestors, and his noble attributes were shaped by his righteous upbringing, the teachings of the Holy Quran and the rich cultur- al heritage of the Arabs which made him a deeply spiritual man and formed the bedrock of his high moral code. A practical ideal- ist with a humanist’s approach to statecraft, and a believer in the principle of universalism, Sheikh Zayed was far in advance of his peers in thought and action and left an enduring impact upon his nation and humanity. Inspired by the noble values and far-reaching vision of this wise and benevolent Ruler, the iconic Zayed National Museum stands as a memorable monument dedicated to the extraordinary life and everlasting legacy of the ‘Father of the Nation’ who contin- ues to be the ‘beacon of hope and inspiration’ in the Arab World and globally. This narrative presents a historical overview of the pioneering role and unparalleled contributions of Sheikh Zayed as the pre- cursor of political unification in the Arabian Gulf. The dynamics of Sheikh Zayed’s political ideology and statesman- like strategies were inspired by the core values and the lessons learned from past precedents. Historically and culturally, the Rul- ers and people of the Emirates have always shared a fundamental unity and community of interest linked by their geography, tribal ties, common socio-economic background and their Arab-Islamic heritage. Long before the advent of the modern era, the history of the Emirates and the Gulf region in general, had witnessed the formation of tribal alliances and powerful tribal confederations founded on unified socio-political and economic structures which laid the groundwork for future unity. As early as 1905, the Ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa [1855-1909], famously known as ‘Zayed the Great’, had taken the pioneering initiative of calling a meeting of all the Rulers of the Arabian Gulf Coast for the first time on his island capital to solve outstanding territorial disputes in council, which displayed a rare example of the Gulf Rulers standing in unison for a common purpose. Subsequently, in the early decades of the 20 th century, the stir- rings of a national awareness for advancement and reform, cou- pled with spontaneous indigenous efforts to promote some form of union among the Gulf Rulers, were notably unique for the time. Although most of these local initiatives did not achieve the desired purpose, in the long run, they gave a new direction of life to the residents of the Arabian Gulf region by showing them the path to unity and change.
كان واقعـــــي التّفكيـــــر، يفهم طبائع الحياة، وإنســـــاني النّظرة في مقاربته لشـــــؤون الحكـــــم، ومؤمنًـــــا بأن العالم أوســـــع من حـــــدود الجغرافيا. وبفضل رؤيتـــــه الثّاقبة وقدرته على تحويل الفكر إلى فعلٍ، ســـــبق معاصريه بخطوات واســـــعة، وترك أثرًا باقيًا في وطنه، وفي مسيرة الإنسانيّة جمعاء. استلهامًا من القيم النّبيلة والرّؤية البعيدة لهذا القائد الحكيم المعطاء، يقف متحف زايد الوطني معلمًا شـــــامخًا، يُخلّد سيرة “والد الأمّة” ومسيرته ال ًاستثنائيّة، وإرثه الذي لًا يزال حيًّا في الوجدان. فهو شاهد على حياة رجل تحوّل إلى رمزٍ، ومصدر أمل وإلهام لًا ينضب للعالم العربيّ، وللعالم بأسره. وتُقدّم هذه السّـــــرديّة قراءة تاريخيّة لدور الشّيخ زايد الرّائد، وإسهاماته الفريدة، بصفتـــــه صاحـــــب المبادرة الأولى لمســـــار التّوحيد السّياســـــي فـــــي منطقة الخليج العربيّ. فقد كان الطّريق إلى توحيد الإمارات، التي كانت مســـــتقلّة آنذاك، محفوفًا بالتّحديـــــات الكبرى، إل ًا أن عزيمتـــــه التي ل ًا تلين، وجهوده التي ل ًا تفتر، مكّنتاه من بلوغ الهدف المنشود، إيمانًا منه بأنّ: “ما أُنجز يفوق كل تصوّرٍ، وذلك بعون من اللّـه وتوفيقـــــه أوّلًاً. وبتوفير الإرادة المخلصة، ليس هناك مســـــتحيل أمام العزم الأكيد وإخاص النّوايا لخدمة الشعب.” فكرة ضاربة في جذور التّاريخ … الاتّحاد اســـــتمدّت رؤية الشـــــيخ زايد السياسيّة واســـــتراتيجيّاته الحكيمة أسسها من قيم عميقـــــة، ودروس متوارثة صاغتهـــــا التّجارب التّاريخيّة السّـــــابقة. فمن النّاحيتين التّاريخيّـــــة والثقافيّة، عرف حـــــكّام الإمارات وأبناؤها حالة مـــــن الوحدة الفطريّة

والمصالح المشـــــتركة، رسّـــــختها الجغرافيا الواحـــــدة، والرّوابط القبليّة، والتّشـــــابه في أنماط الحياة، إضافة إلى الإرث العربي الإســـــامي الذي جمعهم. وقبل بزوغ فجر العصر الحديث، شـــــهد تاريخ الإمارات ومنطقة الخليج عمومًا نشوء تحالفات قبليّة واتّحادات قويّة، قامت على بنًى اجتماعيّة وسياســـــيّة واقتصاديّة موحَّدة، وكانت بمثابة اللّبنة الأولى التي مهّدت لتبلور فكرة الًاتّحاد في المستقبل. ، بادر حاكم إمارة أبوظبي 1905 في مطلع القرن العشرين، وتحديدًا عام ]، المعروف بلقـــــب “زايد الكبير”، 1909–1855 الشـــــيخ زايد بـــــن خليفة [ إلى خطوة رائدة حين دعا وللمرّة الأولى جميع حكّام ســـــواحل الخليج العربـــــي إلـــــى ال ًاجتماع في عاصمته لبحث الخافـــــات الإقليميّة العالقة ضمـــــن مجلس واحد. وقد مثّلت تلك الدّعوة غير المســـــبوقة مثال ًا ل ًافتًا على اصطفاف حكّام الخليج صفًّا واحدًا سعيًا لتحقيق هدف مشترك.
Some limited attempts to encourage closer co-operation among the Rulers of the seven Emirates had also been undertaken by the British Government during the 1950s and early 60s. But despite their 150-year involvement in the Emirates, British officialdom had from the very outset realised the fu- tility of a‘British-sponsored federation’ in the area. They even underscored in their policy-statements that political integration to be successful in the region had to be initiated by the Rulers and the people of the Emirates. SHEIKH ZAYED BIN SULTAN AL NAHYAN – PIONEER OF UNIFICATION The accession of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as the Ruler of Abu Dhabi on 6 August 1966, marked a major turning-point in the history of the Emirates. The new Ruler’s political philosophy was based on the car- dinal principle that“Union is the path to strength, the path to self-esteem and power and the path to common good. Fragmentation only results in weakness, and weak entities have no place in the world today”.
