There is a reason stories capture our hearts, as perhaps some- where in their many guises, we still hope to find our very own happily ever after. Stories have always been the mirrors through which humanity contemplates itself. Our dreams, our faith, our longing for love and meaning translate into stories, lasting centuries in the voice of every single storyteller. For centuries, across the Arab World, the spoken tale has been a companion of both solace and wonder. Children grew up lis- tening to storytellers weaving tales solely with voices, turning deserts into theatres, courtyards into wonderlands, and listen- ers into dreamers.
T وعبـــــر التّاريخ، شـــــكّلت الحكاية الشّـــــفويّة في العالم العربي رفيقًا يجمع بين السّـــــلوى والدّهشـــــة. فقد نشـــــأ الأطفـــــال على صوت الحكواتي وهو ينســـــج الحكايات مستعينًا بصوتـــــه وربّمـــــا حـــــركات جســـــده، ليحوّل الصّحراء مسرحًا، والباحات عوالم للدّهشة، والمستمعين رحّالة على صهوة خيالهم. لقـــــد كان العالم العربي موطنًـــــا للرّواة على اختلاف فنونهـــــم. فالحكواتي - المشـــــتقّة تســـــميته مـــــن الحكاية والحكـــــي - لم يكن ثمــــة The Arab World has always been an abode for storytellers. The hakawati , derived from hekaye [story] and haki [to speak], were more than mere narrators; they were keepers of memory and emotion, performers who breathed life into words. Another companion in art, the rawi [narrator], carried the same mission to preserve, to delight, to enlighten. Together they formed the twin spirits of an oral tradition that built a living archive of rich repertoires from the region. The picture we can paint of earliest times of storytelling could be described as otherworldly. The common settings for these story- tellers were the backdrops of their homes, as expansive as their imagination, or set in the mystical landscapes of the Arab re- gion; the desert’s vastness, stars scattered like diamonds, where dunes remember the memory of conversations long exchanged. Little by little, stories joined the cherished archives of the hak- awati ’s collective memories, enriching the artistic heritage of oral storytelling. To this day, storytelling in the region thrives on its communal spirit. Homes, marketplaces, and public squares remain venues for storytellers. And because joy is magnified when it is shared, the tales they spin become a conduit for heart-to-heart ex- changes of empathy, admiration, and ideation. As such, their messages were deemed of great esteem. With growing fanbases came responsibility to professionalise the vocation and adhere to specific moral standards, ensuring that stories carried with them the dignity of wisdom and morality. Arab storytelling, at its core, has never known borders and feels as old as time. The Arab World’s position at the crossroads of trade routes meant that stories from as far as India and North Africa mingled with local lore. Its storytelling heritage has drawn in- ثمّة خيط خفي يشدّنا دائمًا نحو الحكايات؛ وكأنّنـــــا في أعماقنا ما زلنـــــا نؤمن بأن نهاية ســـــعيدة تنتظرنا في ختامهـــــا. فالحكايات، منذ وُجد الإنســـــان، كانـــــت مرآته التي يرى فيها روحه، ويُســـــقِط عليها أحلامه وإيمانه وتوقـــــه إلى الحب والمعنـــــى. وعلى امتداد القرون، ظلّت القصص تعيش بصوت رواتها، تحفظها ذاكرتهم وتجدّدها حناجرهم.

ناقـــــلا للقصّة فحســـــب، بل حافظًـــــا للذّاكرة والمشـــــاعر، وفنّانًـــــا يمنـــــح الكلمـــــات حياة وألوانًا. وإلى جانبه برز الرّاوي، شريك الفن ومؤتمن آخر على الحكاية، يحمل الرّســـــالة نفسها، يصون إرثها، ويَهَب جمهورها متعة الإصغـــــاء، ويفتح عقولهم على نوافذ العلم والمعرفة. ومعًا شـــــكّل الحكواتي والرّاوي روحين متآخيتين في تقليد شـــــفهي واحد، يصنعان مـــــن الكلمات أرشـــــيفًا حيًّا يحفظ ذاكرة المنطقة. وإن أردنـــــا تخيّل مهد فن الحكاية، فأقل ما يمكن أن يُقال عنه أنّه عالم آخر، يكاد يكون أســـــطوريًّا. فمســـــارح الرّواة كانت متّسعة باتّساع مخيلتهم، ورحبة كالفضاء المحيط بهم: صحراء ممتدّة بلا نهاية، سماء مرصّعة بالنّجوم، وكثبان تختزن في طيّاتها قصصًا تناقلتهـــــا الألســـــن فـــــي ليالي السّـــــمر. ومع تعاقـــــب الأيام، تراكمـــــت الحكايات واحدة تلو الأخرى في ذاكرة الحكواتيّ، كأرشـــــيف
يـــــزداد غنًى مع انضمـــــام كل رواية جديدة، ليتحـــــوّل إلـــــى رصيد فني ثميـــــن يحتضن تراث السّرد الشفهي في المنطقة. مـــــا زال فـــــن الحكايـــــة فـــــي منطقتنـــــا، إلى يومنـــــا هذا، يزدهر بروحـــــه النّابعة من قلب المجتمـــــع. فمـــــا تـــــزال البيوت والأســـــواق والسّاحات العامّة فضاءات تحتضن الرّواة وتمنحهم جمهورهـــــم الطبيعيّ. وحيث إن الفـــــرح يتضاعـــــف حين تتقاســـــمه القلوب، تصبـــــح القصص التي ينســـــجونها جســـــرًا لمرور مشـــــاعر التّعاطف والإعجاب وتبادل الأفـــــكار. ولهذا حظيـــــت رســـــائلهم بمكانة رفيعـــــة، لمـــــا كان لها من أثـــــر عميق يلامس النّفوس ويترك فيها بصمة لا تُمحى. ومع ازديـــــاد جمهور الحكواتيّين واتّســـــاع دوائر تأثيرهم، نشأت معهم مسؤوليّة تُحتّم إضفاء صبغة مـــــن الاحتراف على مهنتهم، والالتزام بمعايير أخلاقيّة واضحة، لضمان
spiration from the farthest corners of the world and giv- en back to them, influencing poetry, fables, and even modern literature. Medieval Arab sailors, for instance, brought back marvellous tales from their Indian Ocean voyages, these likely inspired the seafaring adventures of Sindbad the Sailor. Interestingly, Sinbad’s home port of Basra was a real hub of maritime trade. The diversity and inventiveness of talents in this sphere made it pos- sible to absorb and add realms of details, history, and social perspectives. In doing so, its culmination now functions as valuable historiography; a living archive of oral stories, lovingly preserving the nuances of Arab culture, memories, and values throughout the ages. The advent of Islam during the 7 th century enriched the oral storytelling tradition of the region. The Quran it- self is full of inspiring stories about the Prophets [Peace Be Upon Them] and devout people, offering universal lessons on faith, character, wisdom, and generosity of spirit. For instance, the dramatic story of Prophet Yusuf or Prophet Musa [Peace Be Upon Them] is narrat- ed to teach faith and patience.
