And in the Youth competition, 2025’s winner Dan- iel Dian-Ji Wu [Taiwan] offered a striking image of a skateboarder silhouetted against the golden dusk at Venice Beach, Los Angeles. The image is a moment of freedom, ambition and youthful mo- tion, captured in a beautifully minimal frame. This work underlines how the Awards open their lens not just to established professionals but to emerging voices capable of fresh perspectives. Across categories, one of the most interesting cur- rents is how photographers are grappling with
[L] The Pasqueflower, 2025. This was one of the first pasqueflowers of spring, and therefore particularly large. It was photographed in a garden, with a light-coloured background positioned behind the plant in order to place focus on this particular flower. © Oliver Lahrem, Germany, Shortlist, Open Competition, Object, 2025 Sony World Photography Awards [R] Untitled, 2025. The Abu Al-Fasad bird is known for its elegance and graceful movements. This small bird holds a special place in the Egyptian environment, symbolising vibrant nature and beauty. Photographed at Dahab Island, Giza, this image reveals the intricate details of the bird in flight against a natural backdrop. The photographer waited for four hours in the direct sun, to capture this moment. © Ahmed Abdallah, Egypt, Winner, National Awards, Sony World Photography Awards 2025

[L] Ping Pong Club, 2025. Ping Pong or Table Tennis is one of my favourite sport since I was a kid. This photo series tells about Ping Pong playerʹs activity in a Club. I try to create the concept looks different & unique to represent my Signature Photography style. The helmet I use as propertyʹs costume for the players was inspired by Daft Punk. © Hardijanto Budyman, Indonesia, Shortlist, Open Competition, Creative, 2025 Sony World Photography Awards. [M] Akihabara, 2025. The prototype of todayʹs Akihabara was a gathering of street vendors selling parts for radios. After the late 1950ʹs, during a period of rapid economic growth, Akihabara grew into ‘Japanʹs largest electronics town.’ Nowadays, it is famous worldwide for its anime and cosplay culture. With two different faces, we can say Akihabara is a town that embodies an essence of ‘Japaneseness.’ © Hajime Hirano, Japan, Winner, Open Competition, Lifestyle, 2025 Sony World Photography Awards. [R] On the Tightrope, 2025. Suspended between the sky and the earth, Diego Molano, a highline athlete, rests on the slender rope, having traversed nearly 420 metres. Below him lies the -200metre-deep abyss of Piedra Colgada, and around him, the vastness of Colombia. This image captures the courage needed to walk into the void and the serenity of finding peace in the seemingly impossible. © Kevin Molano, Colombia, Shortlist, Open Competition, Lifestyle, 2025 Sony World Photography Awards
